1  | 外史氏日：余觀周秦間儒者動輒日墨，日儒墨，以昌黎大儒推尊孟氏，謂不在禹下，而亦有"孔必用墨，墨必用孔"之言。竊意墨子之說，必有以鼓動天下之人使之尊信者。今觀於泰西之教而乃知之矣。余考泰西之學，其源蓋出於墨子。其謂"人人有自主權利"，則墨子之"尚同"也；其謂"愛汝鄰如己"，則墨子之"兼愛"也；其謂"獨尊上帝，保汝靈魂"，則墨子之"尊天明鬼"也。至於機器之精，攻守之能，則墨子備攻備突、削鳶能飛之緒餘也。而格致之學，無不引其端於《墨子·經上下篇》。當孟子時，天下之言，半歸於墨，而其教衍而為七。門人鄧陵、禽猾之徒，且蔓延於天下。其人於泰西，源流雖不可考，而泰西之賢智推衍其說，至於今日。而地球萬國行墨之道者，十居其七。距之闢之於二千餘歲之前，逮今而駁駿有東來之意，嗚呼，何其奇也! |
