敎諭王一菴先生棟,王棟,字隆吉,號一菴,泰州人。從事心齋。嘉靖戊午,由歲貢授南城訓導,轉泰安,陞南豐敎諭。所至以講學為事,先生之學,其大端有二:一則稟師門格物之㫖而洗發之言格物乃所以致知。平居未與物接,只自安正其身,便是格其物之本格,其物之本便,即是未應時之良知。至於事至物來,推吾身之矩而順事恕施,便是格其物之末格。其物之末,便即是既應時之良知,故致知格物不可分析。一則不以意為心之所發。謂自身之主宰而言謂之心,自心之主宰而言,謂之意心,則虛靈而善應。意有定向而中涵自心,虛靈之中,確然有主者,名之曰意耳。昔者先師蕺山曰,人心徑寸耳,而空中四達有太虛之象虛,故生靈靈生覺覺有主,是曰意,故以意為心之所發為非是,而門下亦且齗齗而不信,於是有答董標心意十問,答史孝服商疑。逮夢奠之後,惲日初為劉子節,要尚將先師言意所在節去之,真索解人而不得,豈知一菴先生所論,若合符節。先生曰:不以意為心之所發,雖自家體驗,見得如此,然頗自信心同理同,可以質諸千古而不惑,顧當時亦無不疑之。然其久於門下者,不能以釋然下士聞道而笑,豈不然乎?周海門作聖學宗傳,多將先儒宗㫖凑合己意,埋没一菴,又不必論也。
