壬寅,詔講筵權罷《禮記》,自今講《尚書》。先是,王安石講《禮記》,數難記者之非是,上以為然,曰:「《禮記》既不當法言,擇其有補者講之如何?」安石對曰:「陛下欲聞法言,宜改他經。」故有是詔。《紀事本末》卷五十三,又卷五十九。案:《玉海》卷二十六:熙寧元年二月十一日,御閣,詔王珪、苗鎮等講《禮記》。十月戊申,詔經筵毋講《禮記》。此作壬寅,與《玉海》異日,必有一誤。據《朔閏考》:是月庚子朔,壬寅乃初三日,戊申乃初九日。 是日,上因留王安石坐,曰:「且欲得卿議論。」上曰:「唐太宗必得魏鄭公,劉備必得諸葛亮,然後可以有為。魏鄭公、諸葛亮誠不世出之人也。」安石對曰:「陛下誠能為堯、舜,則必有皋、夔、稷、契;陛下誠能為高宗,則必有傅說。魏鄭公、諸葛亮皆有道者所羞,何足道哉!」《紀事本末》卷五十九。案:《東都事略》所載此下有云:「以天下之大,人民之眾,百年承平,學者不為不多,然常患無人可以助治者,以陛下擇術未明,推誠未至,雖有皋、夔、傅說之賢,亦將為小人所蔽,卷懷而去。自古悉朝廷無賢者,以人君不明,好近小人;好近小人,則賢人雖欲自達無由矣。」神宗曰:「自古治世,豈能使朝廷無小人?雖堯、舜之時,不能無四凶。」安石曰:「惟能辨四凶而誅之,此所以為堯、舜也。若使四凶得肆其讒慝,則皋、夔、稷、契,亦安肯苟食其祿,以終身乎?」
