400  | 毛吉，字宗吉，餘姚人。景泰甲戌進士，天順五年拜廣東僉事。時城以西流賊殺掠居民殆盡，其東幸無事，而豪宗大户武斷吞，併吉分巡，惠潮悉痛懲之，豪右斂迹。適程鄉賊餘黨作亂，吉督戰擒之，又討平雷廉髙三郡積寇，以平賊功，陞本司副使，下詔褒之，委以邊務。時新㑹告急，吉率都指揮孫璧等官軍三十人，又得民兵將萬人，行至火磴，與賊遇，戰破之，斬首二十餘級，乗勝追至雲岫山，去賊營十餘里，時二鼓，乃號召諸將曰：「賊營後山箐，而前畈田左右皆山隴，若敗，必遯入後山，爾等明日兩哨進據後山，我以精鋭衝其中，合擊之，賊可盡擒也」。約黎明進兵，是夜昏黒，遂至後期，不得已，三哨齊進，賊果敗走。後山吉命潘百户帥精鋭千人據賊營，賊多遺財物，卒競取之，賊遽擁衆馳下，刺殺潘卒，皆自營門湧出，賊從後追之，遂奔潰，吉勒馬揮刃大呼曰：「力戰無隕，衆潰不可禁！」從吏廖振等勸吉姑避之，吉曰：「吾誓不與此賊俱生」。言未已，賊衆持鎗趨吉吉，且罵且戰，猶手斬一賊，斷其臂，力不能支，遂被害。是日，雷雨大作，山谷皆震，連日隂晦，又八日，始得吉屍面，貌如生，舁歸官吏，士民哭者相屬。事聞，贈吉通議大夫、廣東按察使，諡忠襄，録其子科為國子生科，後亦舉進士，官至按察司副使。 |
