字復古，幽州人，少攜其文，見栁開開，竒之，曰：「公輔材也」。舉進士第一，授將作監丞、通判徐、兖二州，改祕書省著作郎、直史館，歴陜西都轉運使，入為翰斯林學士，請發內藏庫佐國用，其料曹瑋之、勝嘉勒賚皆卓識可辦大事，帝甚重之。天禧中，拜給事中、參知政事，於周懐政之誅，力䕶太子，及冦凖罷，真宗欲相迪，迪固辭。一日，對滋福殿，皇太子出拜，以得相為賀，帝顧迪曰：「尚可辭耶？」遂以吏部侍郎同中書門下平章事。㑹丁謂擅權，迪請與謂俱罷，謂出迪知鄆州，謂敗，仁宗，起為祕書監，屢典州郡。太后崩，召為資政殿學士，未幾，復同中書門下平章事，再出領郡，以太子太傅致仕，年七十七薨，諡文定。題河陽後城平嵩閣。
