，字履常，一字無已，彭城人。少而苦志力學，年十六，以文謁曾鞏，一見竒之。熙寜中，王氏經學盛行，師道心非其說，遂絶意進取。元佑初，蘇軾、傅堯俞等薦于朝，起為徐州教授，遷太學博士，以越境出見蘇軾，為言者所中，罷歸。調彭澤令，不赴。久之，召為秘省正字。適遇郊祀，行禮寒甚，無綿衣，妻假諸趙挺之家，師道與挺之為寮壻，而素惡其人，竟不肯服。以寒疾卒，年四十九。
