三月辛未朔，翰林學士歐陽脩兼侍讀學士。脩言：『侍讀最為清近，祖宗時不過一兩人。今與經筵者十四人而侍讀十人，外議皆云「經筵無坐處矣。」欲乞罷臣此命，不使朝廷遴選之清職，遂同列授之冗員。』詔不許。脩固辭不拜。脩又言：『切以學士、待制號為侍從之臣，所以承宴間，備顧問，以論思獻納為職。自祖宗以來，尤所精擇。其後員數漸多。往時學士、待制至六七十員，近年稍吝除拜，今猶及四十餘員。欲乞檢詳前史及國朝故事，自觀文殿大學士至待制，並各立員數，苟無其人，虛位以待。』己卯，起居舍人范鎮知制誥。鎮自罷言職，每因事，未嘗不以儲嗣為言，冀上心感動。及知制誥正謝，又面論之曰：『陛下許臣復三年矣，願早定大計。』
