二月乙卯，孔宗願子若蒙為新泰縣主簿，襲封衍聖公。丙辰，種諤奪四官，隨州安置。初，有司奏劾諤擅興生事，詔繫長安獄。諤乃悉焚當路所與簡牘，置對無一語罣人，惟自引伏。司馬光進讀《資治通鑒》，至蘇秦約六國從事，上曰：『蘇秦、張儀掉三寸舌，乃能如是乎?』光對曰：『秦、儀為縱橫之術，無益於治。臣所以存其事於書者，欲見當時風俗專以辯說相高，人君委國而聽之，此所謂利口覆邦者也。』上曰：『朕聞卿進讀，終日忘倦。』上謂文彥博等曰：『天下弊事至多，不可不革。』彥博對曰：『譬如琴瑟不調，必改而更張之。』韓絳曰：『為政立事，當有大小先後之序。』上曰：『大抵威克厥愛，乃能有濟。』
