六月癸亥，知制誥王益柔兼判禮部貢院。試法分四場，除第三、第四場策論如舊，其第一場試本經五道，第二場《論語》、《孟子》各三道。試官每一人，試卷各分一場考校，考畢，眾官參定高下去留。已巳，王安石請解機務。上曰：『卿無乃謂朕有疑心?朕自知制誥知卿，屬以天下事。如呂誨比卿少正卯、盧杞，朕不為所惑。』安石曰：『臣平生操行本不為人所疑，若任事久，疑似之迹多，而讒誣之人才或過於呂誨，即臣未敢保陛下無疑也。』上曰：『呂公著與卿交遊至相善，然言卿屢矣。卿之所存，雖朋友未必知。至於眾人，見朕與卿相知如此，亦皆不知其所以。君臣之義固重於朋友，若朋友與卿要約勤勤如此，卿亦宜為之少屈。朕既與卿為君臣，安得不為朕少屈?』甲戌，王安石見上曰：『陛下不許臣去，臣不敢固違聖旨，然臣實病，若更黽勉半年，不可強即，須至再煩聖聽。』上曰：『卿許朕就職甚善，如何卻半年後又乞出?且勿如此。』樞密院言：『仁宗時嘗建武學，乞復之。』詔於武成王廟置武學，選文武官知兵者為教授。
