夏四月辛巳，右僕射呂公著為司空、同平章軍國事，仍一月三赴經筵，二日一朝，因至都堂議事；呂大防為左僕射，范純仁為右僕射兼中書侍郎。制詞，學士蘇軾所草也。是夕，軾對於內東門小殿，既承旨。太皇太后忽宣諭軾曰：『內翰何以至此?』軾曰：『遭遇陛下。』曰：『不關老身事，亦不關官家事，此是神宗皇帝之意。當其飲食而停箸看文字，則內人必曰：「此蘇軾文字也。」神宗忽時稱曰：「奇才，奇才!」但未及用學士而上仙爾。』軾哭失聲，太皇太后與上左右皆泣，已而命坐賜茶，曰：『內翰直須盡心事官家，以報先帝知遇。』軾拜而出，撤金蓮燭送歸院。壬午，孫固守門下侍郎，劉摯守中書侍郎，王存守尚書左丞，安燾為右光祿大夫、依前知樞密院事，胡宗愈為中大夫、守尚書右丞，趙瞻為樞密直學士、簽書樞密院事。甲申，韓川、劉安世進對，太皇太后問：『近日差除如何?』安世等曰：『朝廷用人皆協輿望，惟胡宗愈，公議以為未允耳。』癸丑，范祖禹言：『臣不侍經席已踰兩月。昔唐憲宗不對學士兩月，李絳奏曰：「為臣等竊祿偷安之計則便矣，其如陛下何?」陛下如好學，則天下之君子皆欣慕，願立於朝，以直道事陛下，輔助德業而致太平矣。陛下如不好學，則天下之小人皆動其心，欲立於朝，以邪諂事陛下，竊取富貴而專權利矣。』
