94  | 五月，宣徽院使雷有終倜儻自任，能撫士卒，宴犒不足，則傾私帑給之，家無餘財。居數月卒，身後宿負，猶不啻百萬。殿前都虞候張凝忠勇好功名，善訓士卒，賞賜甚厚，多以犒師，京師無居第。上嘗與近臣論將帥曰：『選用武臣實難，倘未嘗更歷，則不能周知其才。太宗所擢甚眾，而優待者唯凝與王斌、王憲等數人。每賜與，絕殊倫輩，乃知先帝知人之明也。』於是凝卒，上甚惜之。詔邊民應募為弓箭手者，給以境內閒田，永蠲其租。庚申，上親試進士范昭等五十一人，諸科一百九十八人。撫州進士晏殊年十四，大名府進士姜益年十二，皆以俊秀聞，特如試殊，試詩、賦各一首；益試詩六篇。殊屬詞敏贍，上深歎賞。宰相寇準以殊江左人，欲抑之而進益。上曰：『朝廷取士，惟才是求。四海一家，豈限遐邇?如前代張九齡輩，何嘗以遐陋而棄置耶!』乃賜殊進士出身，益同學究出身。後二日，復召殊試詩、賦、論。殊具言：賦題嘗私所習。上益愛其淳直，改試他題。既成，數稱善，擢秘書省正字，秘閣讀書，仍命直史館陳彭年視其所學，及檢察其所與游者。詔自今諸州官吏雪活得人命者，並理為分績。 |
