3  | 已而康有為走入英，英人庇焉。遂以李鴻章為兩廣總督，欲詭致之，購求十萬金，而英兵衛之嚴，不可得。鴻章以狀聞，太后大怒曰「此讎必報！」時方食，取玉壺碎之曰：「所以志也。」而梁啟超亦走保日本，使劉學詢慶寬並刺之，無所成而返。 |
| 115 | 鴻章為人，疏闊有大度，然是非利害所在，不敢昌言也。其督兩廣，太后使掘康有為梁啟超祖父墳，鴻章頗枝梧，太后意甚怨。然太后喜聯俄，鴻章雅輿俄善，太后欲倚鴻章結俄歡，至盡舉中國海軍船畀俄，日本爭之，乃止。太后恐各國之議己也，欲引俄為衛，俄亦自許能衛我，太后及鴻章皆信之。張之洞初上書請聯俄，戊戌以後，又主聯英曰，實忌鴻章居大名，欲立異以抗之。然鴻章盛時，之洞依附之獨諂。之洞佞巧善迎合，不主故常，薦吳永為異才，尤為時所笑。然北人以善宦致總督，惟之洞為有聲。 |
