37  | 王質，字華卿，太原祁人。五代祖通，字仲淹，隋末大儒，號文中子。通生福祚，終上蔡主簿。福祚生勉，登進士第，制策登科，位終寶鼎令。勉生怡，終渝州司戶。怡生潛，揚州天長丞。質則潛之第五子。少負志操，以家世官卑，思立名於世，以大其門。寓居壽春，躬耕以養母，專以講學為事，門人受業者大集其門。年甫強仕，不求聞達，親友規之曰：「以華卿之才，取名位如俯拾地芥耳，安自苦於亹茸者乎？揚名顯親，非耕稼可致也。」質乃白於母，請赴鄉舉。元和六年，登進士甲科。釋褐嶺南管記，歷佐淮蔡、許昌、梓潼、興元四府，累奏兼監察御史。入朝為殿中，遷侍御史、戶部員外郎。為舊府延薦、檢校司封郎中，賜金紫，充興元節度副使。入為戶部郎中，遷諫議大夫。 |
