高郵派有王念孫,所著曰《讀書雜志》、《廣雅疏證》。引之為念孫子,所著曰《經義述聞》、《經傳釋詞》。高郵自創一派,專以形聲訓詁校勘古書,於是千古沈晦不可解之文詞,循其例,無不渙然冰釋。俞樾踵其後,為《群經平議》,為《諸子平議》,為《古書疑義舉例》,而後四部書之訛文脫簡,重門洞開,可謂周、孔之掃夫,劉、班之嫡子。曾文正《聖哲畫像記》推為集小學之大成,蓋猶等夷之見矣。

孫芝房嘗作《畚塘芻論》,痛詆漢學,謂其致粵寇之亂,曾文正非之。其後左文襄作《吾學錄序》,持論亦與芝房相同。蓋文襄固亦由理學養成之人物,於漢學素少研求,故為此不持平之論也。平心論之,漢學諸人,如戴東原、王念孫,其人品亦無可議。然如毛西河之猖狂恣肆,王鳴盛之貪得無厭,則殊為人心風俗之憂耳。

魁儒之說經鏗鏗者,莫不由《說文》以辨形聲,由《爾雅》以通訓詁,故其撰著,皆卓然名家。《爾雅》則邵晉涵之《正義》,特出邢疏之右,郝懿行之《義疏》,訓詁精確,草木歸諸實驗。《小爾雅》則有胡承珙之《義證》,宋翔鳳之《訓纂》。《廣雅》則有王念孫之《疏證》,旁搜博考,足與經訓互相發明。精《說文》者,始於惠棟之《讀說文記》,其後則推段玉裁、王筠、朱駿聲三家。駿聲之《說文通訓定聲》,發明轉注假借,其書似因而實創。筠之《釋例》,多引鐘鼎古籀,以證《說文》字,而又為之句讀,故皆服其精審。玉裁《說文注》,實為叔重功臣,而不免武斷。以《玉篇》校《說文》者,始於鈕樹玉,玉裁采其說,不著其名,樹玉憾之,作《段注訂》八卷。徐承慶又為《段注匡謬》,亦以玉裁名太重耳。至姚文田、嚴可均同撰《說文校議》,分條考訂,人亦稱為精確也。
