Dian Ge Cilin Ji (殿閣詞林記)

'Dian Ge Cilin Ji' is a 22-volume work compiled by Liao Daonan during the Ming dynasty. Liao Daonan, who also authored 'Chu Ji' (楚紀), began his career as a Shujishi (庶吉士) in the Zhengde era, specifically in the year Xin Si (1501). He later served as a compiler and eventually rose to the position of Shizhangxueshi (侍講學士), spending a significant portion of his career in the literary and academic circles of the imperial court.

Liao Daonan's 'Dian Ge Cilin Ji' is a comprehensive collection of historical accounts and anecdotes about officials who served in various imperial institutions, including the palace halls, palace academies, and government offices. The work is organized into several categories, each representing a specific rank or position within the imperial bureaucracy. These categories include:

- Dianxue (殿學): Officials who served in the prestigious Huagai (華蓋) and Wuying (武英) halls.

- Gexue (閣學): Officials who served in the Wenyan (文淵) and Dongge (東閣) halls.

- Guangxue (館學): Officials who held positions in the six imperial academies.

- Gongxue (宮學): Officials who were promoted to the rank of Zhan Shi (詹事).

- Fangxue (坊學): Officials who served in the Chunfang (春坊).

- Guangxue (館學) (alternate): Officials who served in the Hongwen (弘文) academy.

- Yongxue (雍學): Officials who were appointed as the head of the National University (Guozi Jian Jijiu, 國子監祭酒).

- Qingxue (卿學): Officials who were promoted to a high-ranking position within their respective departments.

- Zengxue (贈學): Officials who were posthumously honored for their integrity and moral courage.

- Yixue (藝學): Officials who were renowned for their calligraphy and literary skills.

- Yuanxue (院學): Officials who spent their entire careers within the imperial academies.

The structure of 'Dian Ge Cilin Ji' is modeled after the biographical sections found in traditional Chinese historical texts. Each entry provides detailed information about the official's rank, titles, and imperial favors, along with relevant historical events and anecdotes.

From the ninth volume onwards, the titles of the chapters are attributed to both Guozi Jian Jijiu Huang Zuo (國子監祭酒黃佐) and Shizhangxueshi Liao Daonan. This attribution reflects Liao Daonan's use of material from Huang Zuo's 'Hualin Ji' (翰林記). By crediting Huang Zuo, Liao Daonan demonstrated a respect for his sources, a practice that was highly valued by his predecessors.

Today, 'Dian Ge Cilin Ji' remains an important historical document, providing valuable insights into the lives and careers of Ming dynasty officials. It is a testament to Liao Daonan's thoroughness and dedication to preserving the rich history of the imperial bureaucracy.
