陵之免，吕太后徙平为右丞相，以辟阳侯审食其为左丞相。师古曰：「食其音异基。」食其亦沛人也。汉王之败彭城西，楚取太上皇、吕后为质，食其以舍人侍吕后。其后从破项籍为侯，幸于吕太后。及为相，不治，郑氏曰：「不立治处，使止宫中也。」李竒曰：「不治丞相职事也。」师古曰：「李说是也。」监宫中，如郎中令，公卿百官皆因决事。

吕太后多立诸吕为王，平伪听之。师古曰：「谓且顺从之，不乖牾也。」及吕太后崩，平与太尉勃合谋，卒诛诸吕，立文帝，平本谋也。审食其免相，文帝立，举以为相。如淳曰：「举犹皆也。衆人之议皆以为勃、平功多矣。」师古曰：「言文帝以平、勃俱旧臣，有功，皆欲以为相。」
