揚雄字子雲，蜀郡成都人也。其先出自有周伯僑者，以支庶初食采於晉之揚，師古曰：「采，官也。以官受地，謂之采地。」因氏焉，不知伯僑周何別也。師古曰：「別謂分系緒也。」揚在河、汾之閒，應劭曰：「左傳霍、揚、韓、魏皆姬姓也。揚，今河東揚縣。」周衰而揚氏或稱侯，號曰揚侯。會晉六卿爭權，韓、魏、趙興而范中行、知伯弊。當是時，偪揚侯，晉灼曰：「漢名臣奏載張衡說，云晉大夫食采於揚，為揚氏，食我有罪而揚氏滅。無揚侯。有揚侯則非六卿所偪也。」師古曰：「晉說是也。雄之自序譜諜蓋為疏謬，范中行不與知伯同時滅，何得言當是時偪揚侯乎？偪，古逼字。」揚侯逃於楚巫山，師古曰：「巫山，今在荊州西南也。」因家焉。楚漢之興也，揚氏遡江上，處巴江州。李竒曰：「江州，縣名也，巴郡所治也。」師古曰：「遡謂逆流而上也，音素。」而揚季官至廬江太守，漢元鼎閒避仇復遡江上，處㟭山之陽曰郫，師古曰：「㟭山，江水所出也。山南曰陽。郫，縣名也。㟭音旻。郫音疲。」有田一㙻，晉灼曰：「周禮，上地夫一壥，一百畝也。」有宅一區，世世以農桑為業。自季至雄，五世而傳一子，故雄亡它揚於蜀。師古曰：「蜀諸姓揚者皆非雄族，故言雄無它揚。」
