12  | 嶺南人以檳榔代茶，且謂可以御瘴。餘始至不能食，久之，亦能稍稍。居歲餘，則不可一日無此君矣。故嘗謂檳榔之功有四：一曰醒能使之醉。蓋每食之，則醺然頰赤，若飲酒然。東坡所謂「紅潮登頰醉檳榔」者是也。二曰醉能使之醒。蓋酒後嚼之，則寬氣下痰，餘酲頓解。三曰饑能使之飽。蓋饑而食之，則充然氣盛，若有飽意。四曰飽能使之饑。蓋食後食之，則飲食消化，不至停積。嘗舉似於西堂先生範叟。曰：「子可謂『檳榔舉主』矣。然子知其功，未知其德，檳榔賦性疏通而不洩氣。稟味嚴正而有餘甘。有是德，故有是功也。」 |
