六年十二月左司諫陳公輔請禁程氏學,從之。先是,崇寧以來,禁錮元祐學術。帝渡江,復尊尚程頤之學。至是,公輔上疏,言「今世取程頤之說,謂之伊川之學,相率從之,倡為大言,謂:堯、舜、文、武之道傳之仲尼,仲尼傳之孟軻傳之死遂無傳焉。狂言怪語,淫說鄙論,曰:此伊川之文也。幅巾大袖,高視闊步,曰:此伊川之行也。師伊川之文,行伊川之行,則為賢士大夫,捨此者非也。誠恐士習從此大壞,乞禁止之」遂詔「士大夫之學,一以孔、孟為師,庶幾言行相稱,可濟時用。臣僚所奏,可布中外,使知朕意」時方召尹焞門人也,公輔之意蓋有所指云。

淳祐元年春正月甲辰,詔曰「朕惟孔子之道,自孟軻不得其傳,至我朝周敦頤張載程顥程頤,真見實踐,深探聖域,千載絕學,始有指歸。中興以來,又得朱熹,精思明辨,折衷融會,使《大學》、《論》、《孟》、《中庸》之旨本末洞徹,孔子之道益以大明於世。朕每觀五臣論著,啟沃良多。今視學有日,其令學官列諸從祀,以副朕崇獎儒先之意」尋以「王安石謂天變不足畏,祖宗不足法,人言不足恤,為萬世罪人,豈宜從祀孔子。其黜之」

程顥,字伯淳,河南人。顥資稟既異,而充養有道,純粹如精金,溫潤如良玉,寬而有制,和而不流,胸懷洞然,徹視無間,極其德美,非形容所可及。自十五六時,聞周茂叔論道,遂厭科舉之學,慨然有求道之志。未知其要,泛濫於諸家,出入於老、釋者幾十年,返求之六經而後得之。知盡性至命必本於孝弟,窮神知化由通於禮樂,辨異端似是之非,開百代未明之惑,秦、漢而下,未有臻斯理也。謂孟子沒而聖學不傳,以興起斯文為己任。其言曰:道之不明,異端害之也。昔之害近而易知,今之害深而難見。昔之惑人也乘其迷暗,今之惑人也因其高明。自謂之窮神知化,而不足以開物成務。言為無不周遍,實則外於倫理。窮深極微,而不可以入堯、舜之道。天下之學,非淺陋固滯則必入於此。是皆正路之蓁蕪,聖門之蔽塞,闢之而後可以入道」其卒也,文彥博題其墓曰明道先生。弟序之曰「周公沒,聖人之道不行。孟軻死,聖人之道不傳。道不行,百世無善治。道不傳,千載無真儒。無善治,士猶得以明夫善治之道,以淑諸人,以傳諸後。無真儒,則天下貿貿焉莫知所之,人欲肆而天理滅矣。先生生乎千百年之後,得不傳之道於遺經,以興起斯文為己任,辨異端,闢邪說,使聖人之道煥然復明於世。蓋自孟子之後,一人而已。然學者於道不知所向,則孰知斯人之為功,不知所至,則孰知斯名之稱情也哉」
