上詔竇融與五郡太守入朝。融等奉詔而行，官屬賓客相隨，駕乘千餘兩，馬牛羊被野。乘，繩證翻。兩，音亮。被，皮義翻。旣至，詣城門，上印綬。上，時掌翻。詔遣使者還侯印綬，引見，賞賜恩寵，傾動京師。尋拜融冀州牧。冀州部魏郡、鉅鹿、常山、中山、信都、河間、清河、趙國、勃海。又以梁統為太中大夫，姑臧長孔奮為武都郡丞。姑臧在河西最為富饒，姑臧縣，屬武威郡。劉昫曰：姑臧縣，秦月氏戎所處，匈奴名蓋藏城，語訛為姑臧城。長，知兩翻。天下未定，士多不脩檢操，居縣者不盈數月，輒致豐積；奮在職四年，力行清潔，為衆所笑，以為身處脂膏不能自潤。《說文》：戴角者脂，無角者膏。處，昌呂翻。及從融入朝，諸守、令財貨連穀，彌竟川澤；谷，古谷翻。唯奮無資，單車就路，帝以是賞之。

甲寅，以冀州牧竇融為大司空。融自以非舊臣，一旦入朝，朝，直遙翻；下同。在功臣之右，每朝會進見，容貌辭氣，卑恭已甚，帝以此愈親厚之。融小心，久不自安，數辭爵位，數，所角翻。上疏曰：「臣融有子，朝夕敎導以經藝，不令觀天文，見讖記，讖，楚譖翻。誠欲令恭肅畏事，恂恂守道，不願其有才能，何況乃當傳以連城廣土，享故諸侯王國哉！」因復請間求見，復，扶又翻。間，古莧翻。見，賢遍翻；下以意推。帝不許。後朝罷，逡巡席後，逡巡，卻退貌。帝知欲有讓，遂使左右傳出。傳旨使融出也。他日會見，迎詔融曰：「日者知公欲讓職還土，賢曰：日者，猶往日也。故命公暑熱且自便；今相見，宜論他事，勿得復言。」融不敢重陳請。重，直用翻。

夏四月庚辰，大司徒戴涉坐入故太倉令奚涉罪，下獄死。無罪加之以罪曰入。《百官志》：太倉令屬大司農，主受郡國漕轉穀，秩六百石。下，遐稼翻。帝以三公連職，策免大司空竇融。
