冬十月庚子，始分山南东道为两节度，以户部侍郎李逊为襄、复、郢、均、房节度使；以右羽林大将军高霞寓为唐、随、邓节度使。朝议以康与蔡接，故使霞寓专事攻战，而逊调五州之赋以饷之。调，徒吊翻。

寿州团练使李文通奏败淮西兵于固始，拔镞山。镞，五高翻，又五到翻。己卯，唐邓节度使高霞寓奏败淮西兵于朗山，斩首千馀级，焚二栅。

六月甲辰，高霞寓大败于铁城，仅以身免。据旧书：霞寓自萧陂进至文城栅，遇伏而败。意铁城即文城栅，以其坚不可破，故谓之铁城耳。未白曰铁城，在新兴栅东北。新兴栅，在吴房县西南，文城东北。时诸将讨淮西者，胜则虚张杀获，败则匿之；至是，大败不可掩，始上闻，上，时掌翻。中外骇愕。宰相入见，见，贤遍翻。将劝上罢兵，上曰：「胜负兵家之常，今但当论用兵方略，察将帅之不胜任者易之，不胜，音升。兵食不足者助之耳。岂得以一将失，利，遽议罢兵邪！」于是独用裴度之言，他人言罢兵者亦稍息矣。己酉，霞寓退保唐州。

上责高霞寓之败，霞寓称李逊应接不至。李逊主饷，霞寓军因得以罪归之。秋七月，贬霞寓为归州剌史，归州，故之秭归，吴立建平郡，唐置归州，京师南二千二百六十八里。逊亦左迁恩王傅。恩王连，代宗之子。以河南尹郑权为山南东道节度使。以荆南节度使袁滋为彰义节度、申，光，蔡唐，随，邓观察使，以唐州为理所。
