嘗聞吳文恪公訥為御史巡按浙江時,壞秦檜碑,而未知其詳,疑其為檜德政碑。及來浙江,聞仁和縣學有宋刻石經,往觀之,并見此刻,始知公所壞即此石,非檜德政碑也。然於此有以見公學術之正,論議之公,有補於風教多矣。公文集未得見,此作未知載否?因錄以記之右:「宣聖及七十二弟子贊,宋高宗制並書,其像則李龍眠麟所畫也。高宗南渡,建行宮於杭。紹興十四年正月,始即岳飛第作太學。三月臨幸,首製先聖贊,後自顏淵而下,亦撰辭以致褒崇之意。二十六年十二月刻石于學,附以太師尚書左僕射同中書門下平章事樞密使秦檜記。檜之言有曰:『孔聖以儒道設教,弟子皆無邪雜背違於儒道者。今搢紳之習,或未純乎儒術,顧馳狙詐權譎之說,以僥倖於功利。』其意蓋為當時言恢復者發也。嗚呼!靖康之禍,二帝蒙塵,汴都淪覆,當時臣子,正宜枕干嘗膽,以圖恢復。而檜力主和議,攘斥眾謀,盡指一時忠義之言為狙詐權譎之論。先儒朱熹謂其倡邪說以誤國,挾敵勢以要君。其罪上通於天,萬死不足以贖者是也。昔龜山楊先生時,嘗建議罷王安石孔廟配享,識者韙之。訥一介書生,幸際聖明,備員風紀,茲於仁和縣學得觀石刻,見檜之記尚與圖贊並存,因命磨去其文,庶使邪詖之說、姦穢之名不得廁於聖賢圖像之後。然念流傳已久,謹用備識,俾後覽者得有所考云。」
