太后性嚴，明帝涖政初，委任張居正，綜覈名實，太后保䕶之力居多。光宗未立時，給事中姜應麟疏請建儲被謫，太后聞之，弗善也。一日，帝入侍，太后問故，帝曰：「彼都人子也」。太后怒曰：「爾亦都人子！」帝惶恐伏地不敢起，葢內廷呼宫人為都人，太后亦由宫人進，故云光宗由是得立。福王之藩期屢易，鄭貴妃欲遲之，明年，以祝太后誕辰為辭，太后曰：「吾潞王亦可來上夀乎？」貴妃不敢留，期始定。御史曹學程以建言論死，太后憐其母老，言于帝，釋之。太后父偉封武清伯，家人常有過，命中使出數之，而抵其家人。于法素好佛，京師內外多建梵刹，動費鉅萬，帝亦助施無算。及是崩，諡孝定。質實。曹學程，字希明，全州人，督畿輔屯田時，上疏言朝鮮不可封狀，并劾兵部尚書石星、封使楊方亨，表裏應和，不足倚信。帝謂其暗囑闗節，逮下錦衣衛，搒掠無所得，移刑部，坐逆臣失節罪論死。其母年九十餘，哭子待斃，羣臣論救不聴子，正儒刺血書奏乞代父死，亦不省。太后言于帝，適朱賡亦請宥，乃改謫。李偉，字世竒，漷縣人，神宗立，封武清伯，再進武清侯。偉有遇太后，嘗召入宮，切責不以父，故骩祖宗法以是偉益小心，畏慎，有賢聲。卒，贈安國公，諡莊簡。
