先是尊崇興獻帝后，議既定，詔告天下，越數日，帝復手勅加興獻帝后以皇號。楊廷和等上言：「漢宣帝繼孝昭，後追諡史皇孫王夫人曰悼考悼后而已，光武上繼元帝，鉅鹿君以上立廟章陵而已，今與獻加稱帝后，較之前代已極尊崇，若加皇字與孝廟慈夀，並是忘所後而重本生，任私恩而棄大義，臣等不得辭其責，願罷歸」尚書喬字，亦言：正統大義，惟賴皇字以明，若加于本生之親，則正統混而無别，非所以重宗廟、正名分也」。帝曰：「慈夀，皇太后懿㫖，朕不敢違」。廷和等復偕禮官執奏，廷臣諍者百餘人，皆言稱皇非是，請斥張璁邪說，俱不報。及是清寜宮後三小殿災，廷和等因言：興獻帝后加稱列聖神靈，容有未安，今火災示戒，昭然可見。給事中鄧繼曾亦言：「天有五行，火實主禮。人有五事，火實主言，名不正則言不順，言不順則禮不興。今之火災廢禮，失言之效也」。帝勉從衆議，乃稱孝宗曰：「皇考慈夀，皇太后曰聖母興獻帝，后止稱本生，不稱皇」。質實」。鄧繼曾，字士魯，資縣人。甘州軍亂，殺巡撫都御史許銘。
