王敬弘，琅邪臨沂人也。與高祖諱同，故稱字。曾祖暠，晉驃騎將軍。祖胡之，司州刺史。父茂之，晉陵太守。敬弘少有清尚，起家本國左常侍，衛軍參軍。性恬靜，樂山水，為天門太守。敬弘妻，桓玄姊也。敬弘之郡，玄時為荊州，遣信要令過。敬弘至巴陵，謂人曰：「靈寶見要，正當欲與其姊集聚耳，我不能為桓氏贅婿。」

眾並駭愕。琬與陶亮等繕治器甲，徵兵四方。郢州刺史安陸王子綏、荊州刺史臨海王子頊、會稽太守尋陽王子房、雍州刺史袁顗、梁州刺史柳元怙、益州刺史蕭惠開、廣州刺史袁曇遠、徐州刺史薛安都、青州刺史沈文秀、冀州刺史崔道固、湘州行事何慧文、吳郡太守顧琛、吳興太守王曇生、晉陵太守袁標、義興太守劉延熙並同叛逆。

泰始二年正月，並叛逃東歸。遣書要吳郡太守顧琛，琛以母年篤老，又密邇京邑，與長子寶素謀議，未叛。少子寶先時為山陰令，馳書報琛，以南師已近，朝廷孤弱，不時順從，必有覆滅之禍。覬前鋒軍已渡浙江，琛遂據郡同反。吳興太守王曇生、義興太守劉延熙、晉陵太守袁標，一時響應。庾業既東，太宗即以代延熙為義興，加建威將軍，以延熙為巴陵王休若鎮東長史。業至長塘湖，即與延熙合。
