唐太宗以儒學多門,章句繁雜,詔國子祭酒孔穎達與諸儒撰定五經義疏,凡一百七十卷,名曰《五經正義》。穎達既卒,博士馬嘉運駮其所定義疏之失,有詔更定,未就。永徽二年,詔諸臣復考證之,就加增損。永徽四年,頒孔穎達《五經正義》於天下,每年明經依此考試。自唐至宋,明經取士,皆遵此本。夫漢帝稱制臨決,尚未定為全書;博士分門授徒,亦非止一家數;以經學論,未有統一若此之大且久者。此經學之又一變也。其所定五經疏,《易》主王注,《書》主孔傳,《左氏》主杜解;鄭注《易》、《書》,服注《左氏》,皆置不取。論者責其朱紫無別,真贗莫分,唐初編定諸儒誠不得辭其咎。而據《隋經籍志》,鄭注《易》、《書》,服注《左氏》,在隋已浸微將絕,則在唐初已成「廣陵散」矣。北學既并於南,人情各安所習;諸儒之棄彼取此,蓋亦因一時之好尚,定一代之規模。猶之唐行詩賦,本煬帝科舉之遺;明用時文,沿元人經疑之式。名為新義,實襲舊文。《尚書舜典》疏云:「鞭刑,……大隋造律,方始廢之。」《呂刑》疏云:「大隋開皇之初,始除男子宮刑。」以唐人而稱大隋,此沿襲二劉之明證。是則作奏雖工,葛龔之名未去;建國有制,節度之榜猶存。疏失可嗤,不能為諸儒解矣。
