Source: ''Shangshu Jujie (《尚書句解》)'' 'Shangshu Jujie' is a thirteen-volume work on the interpretation of the 'Book of Documents' ('Shangshu'), written by Zhu Zuyi during the Yuan Dynasty. Zhu Zuyi, also known as Ziyou, was from Luling. He provided sentence-by-sentence explanations for various classics, but many of his works have been lost over time, and only 'Shangshu Jujie' has survived. According to the 'Yuan History of Elections', during the reign of Emperor Renzong (Yan祐 period), a system was established to select officials based on their knowledge of the classics, with the 'Shangshu' being studied using ancient commentaries and the 'Jizhuan' (集傳) by Cai Shen. Therefore, Wang Chongyun in his 'Shuyi Jingshi' (《書義矜式''》'' still referred to Kong's commentary. However, by the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the complexity of the ancient commentaries led to the 'Jizhuan' becoming the primary text used in schools. Students preparing for the imperial examinations began to study it from a young age and rarely explored other texts. Zhu Zuyi's 'Shangshu Jujie' was specifically designed to aid young learners. As a result, it primarily follows the interpretations of Cai Shen and does not delve into detailed historical or textual考证. The work rarely cites sources or references for its explanations of words and objects. However, it provides clear and straightforward interpretations that make the complex and often difficult passages of the 'Shangshu' accessible and understandable. This approach aligns with the ancient concept of "separating the text and clarifying the meaning" (离经辨志), which emphasizes clarity and comprehension. Compared to other works that rely on speculative and convoluted interpretations, which can obscure the true meaning of the classics, 'Shangshu Jujie' retains the practical and straightforward legacy of earlier scholars. Despite its simplicity, it should not be dismissed as it serves its educational purpose well.
