密不齐字子贱。集解孔安国曰鲁人。正义颜氏家训云：「兖州永昌郡城，旧单父县地也。东门有子贱碑，汉世所立，乃云济南伏生即子贱之后，是『虙』之与『伏』古来通，字误为『宓』，较可明矣。虙字从『虍』，音呼；宓从『宀』。音绵。下俱为『必』，世传写误也。」少孔子四十九岁。索隐家语云「鲁人，字子贱，少孔子三十岁」。此云「四十九」，不同。孔子谓「子贱君子哉！鲁无君子，斯焉取斯？」集解包氏曰：「如鲁无君子，子贱安得此行而学？」子贱为单父宰，正义宋州县也。说苑云：「宓子贱理单父，弹琴，身不下堂，单父理。巫马期以星出，以星入，而单父亦理。巫马期问其故。宓子贱曰：『我之谓任人，子之谓任力。任力者劳，任人者逸。』」反命于孔子，曰：「此国有贤不齐者五人，索隐按家语云「不齐所父事者三人，所兄事者五人，所友者十一人」，不同也。教不齐所以治者。」孔子曰：「惜哉不齐所治者小，所治者大则庶几矣。」
