太平兴国五年，与程羽同知贡举，俄充史馆修撰、判馆事。八年，复典贡部，改集贤殿直学士、判院事。未几，召入翰林为学士。雍熙中，召白与李昉集诸文士纂《文苑英华》一千卷。端拱初，加礼部侍郎，又知贡举。白凡三掌贡士，颇致讥议，然所得士如苏易简、王禹偁、胡宿、李宗谔辈，皆其人也。是时，命复旧制，专委有司，白所取二十八人，罢退既众，群议嚣然。太宗遽召已黜者临轩覆试，连放马国祥、叶齐等八百馀人焉。
