| 67 | 祖望為學，淵博無涯涘，於書無不貫串。在翰林，與紱共借永樂大典讀之，每日各盡二十卷。時開明史館，復為書六通移之，先論藝文，次論表，次論忠義、隱逸兩列傳，皆以其言為韙。生平服膺黃宗羲，宗羲表章明季忠節諸人，祖望益廣修枌社掌故、桑海遺聞以益之，詳盡而核實，可當續史。宗羲宋元學案甫創草槁，祖望博採諸書為之補輯，編成百卷。又七校水經注，三箋困學紀聞，皆足見其汲古之深。又答弟子董秉純、張炳、蔣學鏞、盧鎬等所問經史疑義，錄為經史問答十卷。儀徵阮元嘗謂經學、史才、詞科三者得一足傳，而祖望兼之。其經史問答，實足以繼古賢，啟後學，與顧炎武日知錄相埒。晚年定文槁，刪其十七，為鮚埼亭文集五十卷。 |
