Zhou Zizhi, courtesy name Shaoyin, was a native of Xuancheng. In the middle of Shaoxing, he resided in Lingyang Mountain and twice went to the Ministry of Rites as a local candidate, but both times failed the examination. His family was poor and could only cook once every two days. The people in his neighborhood mocked him without concern, yet he studied even harder. He was sixty-one years old when he first received an official appointment as the third-place finisher of the imperial examination. He served as You Si Yuanwailang and was later appointed to serve as the military governor of Xingguo Jun. After completing his term of office, he was granted a post at a shrine and returned to live on Lushan Mountain. He wrote Taicang Taimi Ji and Zhupo Shihua.

Yue Taiqu
6
Her jade-like face was as beautiful as a flower; she was the daughter of King Yue. From childhood, she had been 娇痴 (delicate and foolish), not singing or dancing. After marrying to become the queen consort of the Southern Kingdom, day by day she longed for her homeland, weeping like rain. When plum fruits turned yellow in both southern and northern banks of the Yangtze River, tides surged at night on the Qinhuai River. The riverbank was often rainy with low-lying wet ground; she quickly built a high terrace to apply her morning makeup. Thousands of boats were ordered to carry soil from Yue territory, happily seeing Yue people still speaking the Yue dialect. Human life is hard when one's feet are planted in foreign land; there would be no more longing for returning to Yue. How easily does a tall terrace collapse? A curved pond also becomes level again. Once Yu JI departed for good, a thousand years have passed, and now this terrace is known only by name, no longer to be seen.

Bai Zhu Ge (Song of White Flax)
8
The grand chuishou and minor chuishou dances, the white zhu of Jiangnan is the best. There is a Wu ji with ten fingers like jade, slender and graceful, dancing in newly made white zhu robes. The river Jiuyu flows around Wugong on all four sides. The frost-covered orange trees in Wu Palace turn red tree by tree; King Wu holds a banquet at night and does not know it is dawn. Only to see the red sun rising hazy and bright, a beauty lowers her buns and again rolls up her sleeves. I hold wine to present to you as a tribute for your longevity; when life is going well and one's ambitions are fulfilled, why not enjoy oneself? The sun passes like a shuttle, night urges the day; Wu Shan remains as before and Wu Jiang is clear. Desolate palaces and old gardens are hard to feel for; I wonder who sent the deer of Nanshan Mountain To still descend beneath Gu Su Tai.

Yinma Changchengku Xing
10
The Chang'an city's borderland stretches ten thousand li, where sandy fields have no wells. The Qin people dug the earth to build a city; beneath its walls lie deep caves and cold river water. A general's command echoes as the protector leads western campaigns up the Long mountain in bitter cold. At dusk on the wild plains, camels run without finding water, seeking only to drink their horses. In the Great Wall's caves, beyond those caves of the border, since ancient times many white bones lie from battles fought; half of the soldiers become dust beneath horse hooves. Still they charge fiercely toward Yanshan Mountain, leaving in autumn when frosty geese cry out, returning to see spring grass sprout at Yumen Pass. The general's great merit earns him fiefdoms over cities, yet those who died in battle remain nameless on the military records.

Changgan Qu
12
At dusk, the bright moon rises above the red tower; through the embroidered curtains, the moonlight scatters as fragrant mist drifts past the painted balustrade. With hands hanging down in the pavilion, a maiden faces the moon and lowers her head, her brows furrowed, her figure resembling the water beneath Changgan Bridge, flowing away for thousands of miles with no return.
13
A father of five sons.
14
With white hair hanging down, a father of five sons, he toiled diligently all his life to establish a family lineage. Five sons cook white meat and cut fresh red meat, Old man gathers firewood to provide for five sons. A bleak wind blew coldly as the sun set; an old man went into the mountains to gather herbs and encountered a fierce tiger. A fierce tiger grinds its teeth and lies by the roadside; five sons hold spears—who dares to advance?
15
The demon army marched forward.
16
To the south of Wuling, there are many mountains where carriages frequently travel; one traverses thousands of hills and ridges daily within the mountain range. People eat vegetables but not meat, and in ten households, nine practice magic. The county officials give money to capture eight hundred thousand devils. On the same day, the army mobilized together, and a general newly defeated a powerful enemy. Before turning back his horse, he arranged swords like flowing water; freshly beheaded demons, raised feathered banners, and sent their heads to Tian Ting Gaotie Street for execution. At that time, Pingtian was a battlefield; to this day, the remains of the dead are left unburied. Although the old dwellings still stand, no people can be seen, and broken houses with low walls surround the place desolately.
17
Transport grain to proceed.
18
The cold weather in the village, every family is busy. They feed oxen and harvest rice to hurry to the threshing floor; they burn firewood to cook millet and call their wives and children. At midnight, they pound millet to deliver to the government granary. The older son carries a sack while the younger one bears a bag on his back. They sweep the storehouse and pour grain into the silo without needing to be bad-tempered. The county official did not visit the door of Xuxi village head, and thus the entire family rejoiced at having fulfilled their official tax obligations. Last year there was rice but we did not want to have any left over, this year white rice is as precious as pearls. An old man by the roadside clapped his hands and laughed, saying that all the soldiers and officials disliked coarse rice. Good farmers raise soldiers to compete with the enemy; the enemy's cavalry does not come from runaway convicts. Farming families contribute their entire year's supply of millet for farming, ten farmers support one soldier. One soldier is fat, one soldier incites rebellion, ten soldiers follow a thousand families; one torch leaves no survivors. Do not raise troops, raising troops leads to killing people without anyone knowing.

Cold Food Tune
20
The spring scenery of Jiangnan is at its best in March; buy wine, every household prepares Hanshi Festival. Men called out to women and they all went out for a tour, supporting the elderly and returning drunk with utmost joy. The streets remain empty all day, with few people in the city and more in mountain villages. They stomp their feet singing songs to fulfill vows at ancestral tombs for a while, then return home hearing laughter; how could they have imagined that now, on the hundred-and-fifth day after Qingming, painted banners fill the city and war drums beat like hammers? Half of descendants are already people beneath the springs [i.e., dead], thin wine cannot moisten the soil on mountain graves. The dead have passed away while the living remain; each child and daughter enjoys life as they please. Boiling fish and wrapping vegetables for a meal, flowers serve as red makeup and birds sing and dance. Haven't you heard? There are many battlefields both south and north of the Yangtze River, last year's white bones were left unburied by anyone.

Song of the Hibiscus Mutabilis
22
Ten li of frost in Wujiang, Hua Qian, autumn sky without clouds. On a warm day with frost, the banana trees are dark and the curtain hangs down; red hibiscus blooms gracefully. Silver beds are heavy with mist, ginkgo leaves fly like gold coins sweeping the ground. Autumn orchids wilt—nobody is there to face the autumn wind laughing. "Huangshukui," flowers in different tones slowly, green 妖 red intoxicates people. Xu Niang has not aged; Qiu Niang is young and youthful. In those happy times of youth, joy was abundant. "The shadow of red lotus falls on the autumn river waves. The daughter of Rixie is white as jade. At midnight picking lotuses, oar songs are heard; startled winds blow up waves, geese rise." "Looking back at the sun and moon in the loom of dragons, facing flowers without drinking now is a regret." Tears wet by autumn winds—what can one do? The march to Moling.
23
The gates of Moling city did not open at night; on the city walls, drums were beaten like thunder in spring. Red-robed men carried torches that set civilian houses ablaze; a single flame from ten thousand wells sent red dust flying. Corpses lay across the roadside, unrecognizable, with blood flowing everywhere. But I see in the red mansion of Qinhuai, a hundred officials and attendants are all taken for their names to be recorded in the register of crimes; Yuanrong is captured and cannot return. The bandits sit on the yellow hall, freely issuing orders and scolding people, while the imperial decree is transmitted by morning, reaching all nine provinces. The governors of the nine provinces dared not take charge. It is laughable that the official troops, with their quivers of feathered arrows, surrounded by common soldiers and approaching the city tower and general's pavilion under the river fleet, caused the Wuxia to lose heart, both banners flying together. On a single day, fifty-three heads were beheaded; in one battle, how could their might ever wane? The troops have met this year's newly appointed general. The drunken officer of Balin, do not rashly show anger. Civil governance brings peace and martial strength quells chaos. If not for him, who else would clear the dust and turmoil?
24
Jingdu Qu (Song of Dragon-Boat Racing)
25
The river wind howled fiercely as it billowed the red banners; the boatmen, dressed in their gear, boasted of water sports. He wore a short coat and green cap with half-armor of brocade; his eyes, like rolling waves, and his flowing hair flew like the scales of a giant fish. The river tide is vast and the river water wide, Wave flowers shatter into countless piles of snow. The oars split the water and do not return, white feathers leave the bowstring as arrows just depart; returning drunk, I compose a song of treading waves, should laugh at Wu children bowing to their mother by the waves. Red towers face each other in green shade, both banks' people enjoy much joy; rice bowls and zongzi wrapped with five colors, Chu customs remain unchanged until today. At dusk, where is the empty song? Not seeing Sanlv's time of wretchedness.
26
"Shelu Xing."
27
White feathers and red banners encircle the foot of the mountain, all vying to shoot the fleeing deer before the hill. The hunters raise their nets with constant hardship; who rests on its hide and eats its flesh? The fetus in the womb has just formed a spot; Crushed plum blossoms and pearls form circles. Double peaches press down on the hairpin, jade 簪 short, Going to become whose headpiece? Noble families with abundant gold follow fashion's favor, Still frown at their eyebrows as if they are not early enough. One pelt is worth ten thousand coins, Competing to wrap and stuff it as a precious treasure. Large ones have fur and patterns, None left in the family—how unjust! Who is the son of Yu Yingqiongbian? The one who first made this terracotta figure knew he was not a virtuous man.

Double Magpies Flying
29
Recalling the past, my hometown suffered from turmoil and chaos; two old men fled to a place where twin magpies flew. One magpie flew southward while the other flew northward; the northern magpie fell to the ground while the southern magpie perched. Heaven is long and earth distant, going without return; when a nest tilts and eggs break, it brings sorrow to people. Last year the bandit forces first gathered as a faction, today the royal army has just lifted the siege. Only a few ten-thousand-household families remain in Chongling, and now one family from Luogu returns alone. Returning to search for my native place, I do not know where it is; with a white head, I struggle along the road full of mud. To the west of the city there are houses but no one dwells in them; to the east, there is land but no huts or dwellings. They seem like places I once visited before; tears gather on my double eyelashes as I sigh with emotion.

The swallows carry pines and go.
31
When will the two swallows return? They had sent a nest to be built in the vast sea. The rafters of the nest remain unchanged, deep into spring. At first, they raised their young carefully; two fledglings looked up eagerly, calling out for food from the male and female parents. One fledgling fell dangerously to the ground, crying loudly; the mother followed the father back, saw her young weeping, and the owner took the fledgling into his room. The two fledglings escaped death, their wings about to spread, dressed in pure white feathers, they left and returned again. The following year, the host held a birthday banquet. The painted drums ceased beating; the dancers and musicians performed for both young children. They rushed back to their seats, then turned around together, holding green cypress branches in their mouths, unable to speak, expressing themselves with gestures instead. They bowed twice before the host, wishing him longevity like that of the cypress tree.

The Ballad of Shi Fu.
33
If you have a son and a boudoir, do not marry a courtesan from a pleasure house. When a daughter-in-law serves her mother-in-law and father-in-law, she should not marry a wayward young man. The heart of a woman is fickle and follows others without fixed standards; once a wandering son departs, he forgets his hometown. The virtuous woman on the mountain is unknown to all, leaping onto the mountain she faces life and death apart. People regard this woman as stone, Not believing her heart is originally stone. Could there be no other person to accompany me? Those two tresses of hers are truly my special one. The river's flow may be exhausted and mountains leveled, yet endless is the emotion through millennia; had I known you would leave without word. Regret not devoting one's body to a cause, like the song of Weisheng and Mu Chou.
34
The lotus flowers are deep red, the lotus leaves green; on level sand beneath the moon mandarin ducks roost. A girl with a slender waist and jade tablet holds a "rao," under the moon she sings a song without sorrow. Move the boat into the flowers, the flowers turn, deep flowers, deep tune, bitterness and difficulty" as the melody. "Who will speak with me at midnight by the river? Only Changhuan knows this heart," "The dew becomes gradually white and the moon reaches its zenith; I row my boat to seek the path of rice time myself." In the Ming dynasty, they tied up the boat at Liu Bianmen, yet sang songs of a building by the place where the tide receded last night.
35
Tao Li Yan: The spring breeze brings glory and splendor to Jingluo; on the nine roads, fragrant dust flies toward the tower. The zithers resound, a beauty leans on a long railing, with jade curtains rolled up—whose fair face is it? What is the name of the large boat that carries gold and silver for the family of Langba Shang? The boat mooring pavilion at Keduo is quiet, below which lutes and clear songs blend together. Day after day we enjoy ourselves in the tower, saying that our union will last as long as the river flows together into old age. There is an oath of alliance, one day buying the beauty's cicada-like hair lightly combed and brushed. The feelings follow the joy of a new lover, while the affection for an old one grows thin. Last year with Qingtang, this year peonies are given. Human life has honor and decline, yet it does not await decay to fade. The courtesan did not marry a man of deep feelings, and missed her appointment to visit Machgu Temple.
36
In the clear autumn, millet and sorghum fields in the southern fields are harvested; there is little to do. Early in the morning, I feel a pleasant urge, and with a whip in hand, I set out on a light journey. Trailing without trace like a flying gibbon, it leaps mightily to the treetop's tip. Above is a shrine of the Immortal Lady, its beams and eaves somewhat leaning; soaring into the air, one imagines cloud carriages, but only traces like bird claws remain. Three or four monks in yellow hats are there, their vitality and endeavors quite haphazard. I would rather ask about the cinnabar furnace, To thoroughly explore the clouded mountains; The Daoist laughed without speaking, This meaning was not yet understood. But it is said that Yu Xuyu must hasten to Yuan Mountain, where Jing Hu's early victory and the practice of virtue are difficult for Lüdu alone; immortal affairs also remain obscure. Fully understand worldly people, dust and mundane things separate Pengdao Island."
37
A small pot holds Jiang wax; the plum blossoms, yōu, and jué are all delightful. Create three absolute wonders to cover one's eyes—plum blossoms should not be too many, for they vex people beyond what fragrance can do. Under moonlight, the copper pot's shadow is shyly cast; short trees with slanting branches recall a low slope.
38
Wu Niang jie disu chengrui tian nü, neng rong la zuo hua, fu yu shiren shuo yanchou fengliu. The two daughters originally belonged to the same family.
39
The Jade Maiden of Ruzhu Palace, Chang'e with white jade skin and Yujin robes, meets under the moon in complete silence, smiling as she points to Penghu and returns home together.
40
Dao Youyu qianjiang you xi, Puwen zhi, luren yun: yi guo yuanren sheng ru luohua, sui yu jie ke xi, dan kong douluo mian, qianlian ru jingqi. My horse is not yet tethered; it can still be used for secluded affairs. On the way I encountered Xipu Mountain, wishing to inquire about Canliaozi. Lifting my whip, I trusted in my lame donkey; rolling up my trousers, I crossed the flowing water. Vaguely gazing at Three Mountains, winding around for a thousand li. A boy from Wu pointed it out to me: "It is only separated by one mountain." How laughable this dead-end path is! When the 兴致 was exhausted, I stopped as well. "I once occupied a perilous position in heaven, and nothing was not thus; small matters are now repeated, and great ones have already ended!" Night rain at Yuetai.
41
At night, the Qinhuai River is shrouded in rain; lamps dimly illuminate the Yue Nu Temple. The cold window returns with a short autumn dream on my pillow; as a traveler, I know the geese have just arrived. What is certain is that carving insects is a humble skill for tomorrow. Go upstream to Chongli, go fishing and take a late afternoon stroll; Jiezhu Temple, the former residence of Wang Yishao, the monks in the temple hold candles for viewing. The portrait of Wang Youjun was painted by visiting the White Goose and Ink Pools, returning at three geng after noon.
42
Endless and weary of travel, I am suddenly tired of being a traveler. Stepping outside, I meet dust in the wind; how much more so with the oppressive heat? This journey pleases my original heart, when abruptly I see an elegant building. Once was the dwelling of a noble recluse, whose trees and woods are also strange and ancient. A faint breeze enters my cap and robe, scattering shadows through the corridor. The monk's window is quiet without dust; lamps and fire illuminate his brows. Seeing this relaxed posture, sparse white hair can be counted. To die in joy was not false; his complexion resembles that of a maiden. A flat pool holds clear spring water, dripping after new rain. Who said by the pond, supreme skill is naturally given? The goose flock has long been empty; where now are those round fans? When the 兴致 is exhausted, one should return; at nightfall, the moon begins to rise above Guiyun Dong.
43
Master Lao Ming of Nanhua has a portrait that is particularly elegant and ancient-looking. Once a hanging empty moon of old, now it becomes returning cloud soil. The clouds come without intent; where will they go when they depart! Only empty caves and springs remain, green bowls containing white milk. Who will support this grand hall again? The broken bricks have long remained unrepaired. The rustling of trees forms its own wind; the mountain's moisture seems about to bring rain. The depths of seclusion have not yet sated my eyes, and dragging my staff has already become painful for my feet. Going into the mountains, who will meet me? Coming out of the mountains, whom should I trust to not hinder me? A guest came and went as he pleased, while the mountain monk had not a single word to say.

Following the Rhyme of Ciqing's Letter to Me

To whom can I open my heart and aspirations in this life? Only the white hair on my temples painfully urges me; all worldly affairs are now but a dream. A mere heart, laughably already turned to ashes. How can poetry fly away from this long road? Our acquaintance is shallow, I only fear that rain will not come. This feeling brings joy as you remain unaffected by cold or warmth. Often send letters, the wild geese return from the frontier.

Two Poems After an Illness
47
The mountain still has the living before the plum blossoms, left after illness to bloom in leisure. Who will support my weak steps and come with me? Shutting the door deeply, guarding against guests who recite poetry steadily as I send cups into the sunset. If the evening sun had intent, it would urge the moon to wander. After illness, my body remains strong; ascending high brings joy, wanting to overturn the mountain but unable to do so. Suddenly a stream appears before me: distant blue skies fly with two egrets, level rapids fall from fishing boats. From now on, if I were not to die, all remaining days would be spent in poetry. On the twenty-eighth day of the second month, snow cleared as I walked up West Mountain Pavilion and showed it to my brothers Tianyong. The mountain still had lingering snow; people's homes nearly forbade smoke. Guests certainly did not resent bird songs, even on sunny days they cherished blooming flowers. Sorrowful colors stretch for a thousand miles—spring wind again brings another year. Do not look back from the high pavilion, white hair fills the river sky. Clear skies pull people out of spring winds that trouble and prevent return. Birds compete to call through endless daylight; each drinks in slanting sunlight. With staff and cane, who will go with me? Holding cups against my wishes, war and weapons fill the world beyond sorrow. People are rare in my eyes. In response to the rhyme from Guxi Xingguosi Evening Gaze.

The flowers and trees in the Chan room still have some faded red hues; this place is accessible through a winding path. The bamboo shadows appear to sway in golden fragments; the wind chimes speak in jade-like tones. Where people come, white birds cross the sky; the mountain stands within Master's leaning staff. The unparalleled song remains unrewarded, and talent has already been exhausted; by the night lamp I scratch my head, my hair like a tangle of hemp.

Two absolute verse poems titled "Following the Rhyme of Bo Da's Great Flood, Showing My Thoughts."
50
The rain swells the flat pond green as a heap; half a door, spring water in sight. Lethargically opening, without money to buy a boat, go away—do not say that what came before will not come again.
51
A thousand households lie beyond sight, no messages can pass through; I know for sure spring is in the sound of rain. The donkey wants to go but is troubled by muddy and slippery ground; how can it obtain a six-foot wild goose that flies westward!
52
In response to Zhao Sicheng and Shen Yanshu's spring day poem, "Three Thousand Guests," with a regulated verse: The Eight Elegies. In the poem, "●Shen Lang," one day your achievements will be recorded in bamboo slips and silk scrolls; now we share cups of wine together in sorrow and laughter. Birds entertain guests by urging them to drink at times; rain also pities flowers and does not beat their fragrance. Wake up and get drunk together with spring; Heaven allows idle days to be long for your sake.
53
In response to the rhyme of Wu Sidao, a gift for Guxi Daoren.

My remaining years I would seek to spend with companions in the mountains; all worldly matters I have grown weary of discussing with my younger generation. Laughing at my carrying a family and often being a guest, I envy you for having bought land and already built an hermitage. Early on, transform the thousand-year dream of Liao Hai into a single drop of sweetness from Caoxi. I heard that Master Yu has recently formed a new group; Luan Yun now is no longer a regular participant.

Following the rhyme scheme of Ci Qing's poem for bringing wine to visit me.
56
Sleeping through blooming flowers brings no joy, Who closes and who opens the thorny gate? I would like to set off in a boat beneath the moon, and then take wine with me on the east wind. Let us not speak of premature graying hair; joy and sorrow are best entrusted to the remaining cups. "Though you have no old friends but only new ones now, we should meet a hundred times each day."

The road to Baishui Pengmen, autumn winds over an ancient battlefield. People should think of their homeland; the tower stands even more so under the slanting sun. I rely on fish silk to send messages and inquire about your whereabouts at the Thatched Cottage. The bluebells know they have already sprouted; when will I see you, young men, after the rain clears?

The emerald leaves appear like a canopy; lush spring calls but does not return. My sorrow today is like falling catkins; rain seems about to reach Huangmei Saoo. The ground is strewn with fallen flowers as swallows fly past the open gate. The peaks emerged as a few points on the road between clear weather and travel. The dusk color, one bird urging past Zhang. The former residence of the military officer is Quheng Pavilion, and his old home was located in Yanshan Valley. The old man's name was Tingqie, and he had poetry. So-called neighbor's hen call cannot rise, carry them out of the capital region. My old eyes were filled with sorrow and hunger for thousands of measures, but I eventually managed to obtain a single sack of millet. Chi Qulu had not yet returned from his journey, and lightly touring Liang, he felt homesick for the dust of the world. I dislike the local dialect; the road is long. When can I feed my horse and hasten back to prepare for morning travel? Following the rhyme of Ciqing's letter sent to Guxi, at that time I wished to find lodging in Wanling.

My whole life I have wished to hold the reins, bow before your eyebrows, and remember in my mind the true portrait of the people of Taihe from those years; Li Bai's charm resembles that of a celestial being, yet there is no longer any intention to return by boat through snow. The article newly includes "Buju Pian" ("A Poem on Choosing a Place to Live"): "Wearing only a plain headcloth, I still dream of Xitang; when will we ever meet by the riverbank?" .

I often regret that this oath is cold like a fishing cloak, yet for two years the precious kitchen has repeatedly placed it on the serving platter. The spring river's fine rain departs from here; one should not still abandon Jiying's official post.
64
After the rain, there was already a feeling of sorrow; at night I heard the sound of cicadas, which was very urgent. In the morning came three chi of rain, a single sprinkle covering both fields and low-lying areas. The autumn wind sweeps away the rain quickly, and cool air soon follows. A reclusive person leans by a cold window, his drowsy eyes already becoming dim and sluggish. The well's water murmurs with the wind, branches sway in the lingering dampness; I toss and turn through the endless night, the curtain drawn by the breeze, the moon still enters desolately. Qiu He nian gan ci luo wei, qi jie wu qi bu zhi suo? There were no clothes to be had, and at home the loom lay idle with empty bobbins; there was not even a single thread of hemp to spin. With earnest words, autumn insects, why press so urgently?

行邁
Go forward.
66
The autumn hills are bleak without wind, and the leaves of trees fall coldly on their own. The wayfarer cannot return home, and his steps grow ever more weary as he journeys on. The horse neighs along the evening road; I endure hunger and cross the cold stream. The setting sun grows even brighter at dusk, and roosting birds startle and rise again. Each person has their own aspirations in life; who can escape life and death? Going forward and going again, how hard it is for you to endure such hardships. Disordered stones damage the front axle of the carriage; turning back is also appropriate. Hunger and cold seem to drive me away; facing the wind I let out a long sigh as dusk falls for the night's lodging.

In the morning I travel along the foot of the mountain, and at dusk I stay overnight in a lonely village. The elders of the village often invited me; as the sun set, I still lingered at their gate. The cooking smoke does not fill the stove, and while drawing water I again carry firewood. Cook me yellow millet porridge, and I will be satisfied after just a short while. A hundred coins buy fragrant wine, clear and deep it fills the clean cup. Although I do not understand drinking, it is enough to moisten my lips. Tied feet touch a full belly, fire-roasted clothes warm the remaining fragrance. I wish to cease from toil and labor, to be less stained by worldly dust and dusk. With earnest care, he warned the rooster not to crow, for there was no need to call forth the morning sun.

On the Dragon Boat Festival, it rained lightly and then cleared up; broken clouds flew. After the rain passed over the flat plains, the wind blew, forming clusters of emerald jade-like skies that could barely open a sickly eye to see long, unruly branches. Leisurely gathered, mugwort leaves outside the sunny window. How can I bear to face the pomegranate blossoms by my white hair, Fine geshi and fragrant lu hang in the heavens; a black gauze cap and white bamboo mat for sleeping by the north window.

On the night of the eighth day of the fifth month, the moonlight was bright. I greatly wished to visit Machu Zhaoting. The two mountains stretched toward the high sky with white moonlight and endless nights; leaning on my staff, I came to look at the mountain beneath the moon. My old eyes could directly see beyond the mist and fog—numerous peaks seemed to exist in a realm between presence and absence. Where is now the evening wine of the Hanlin Academy? The fairy maiden rides her 鸾 and departs without return; Heaven fears that two mountains might not be seen enough, so it sends a bright mirror to shine upon the rugged cliffs.

The stone of Quanhuang cannot be pulled back; laughing, he watches the official path in Song and Shao open. In his old age, there is no trace left from the ceremony on Mount Tai; all his life, by rivers and lakes, he only fished at the platform. The moon wanes from dusk until Mei Si grows old, and no word comes of the crane; who will visit this guest? "Wu er bu jie gao ren yi, qiu ju he dang jian yi bei." The Hu Xi Dashixuan, though small, is a poem by Longge Lao Ren. Refreshing and accumulating greenery but allowing frequent views, soft red originally does not understand; following others' resistance to vulgar things naturally brings satisfaction. Looking forward to bowing at the head of the horse channel, how could it be angry? "Good to share a laugh with you, what worldly matters can concern one's body?"

The road was repaired and the winding hills were encircled; my feet, ailing from fatigue of travel, found at the foot of the mountain the stone spring known as Mengquan. The deep emerald water filled an urn-like basin in the open pavilion, surrounded by red balustrades, where the green clarity of the waters was clearly visible. The old Chan master Huangbo came and abandoned it, long afterwards I recalled Zhencai, gazing at the blue clouds, clear springs split the cliff face; to this day a handful of sweetness for drinking, the mountain dweller Jin Ding waits for the pine wind, the green dragon breaks the round jade 璧, drunk belly poured into Pengheng, true flavor entrusted to silence and stillness. When shall we plan? Carrying water jars, leaning idly until dusk, the clear and sweet cannot be rinsed; monkeys and birds eat it with me. Wash my ears of dust, boil stones from Nanshan Mountain.

Written under the moon on Mid-Autumn Day
77
Last year, on the Mid-Autumn Festival in the southern part of the city, river clouds obscured the moon and would not clear. A reclusive person stood alone facing the autumn wind; Chang'e seemed shy to appear through thick layers of cloud. The night stretched long when suddenly I heard the urgent sound of morning drums; my dream had gone, leaving only a dying lamp behind. This year, I do not know where my body is, for my gate rests by the Yangtze River and the wind rises on its own. There's wine in the cup and guests seated beside me: the river surface mirrors the sky, and the moon reflects like water. Autumn winds shake trees, causing leaves to fly with a mournful sound; new joys are about to end and turn into sorrow. Many other matters have not gone as planned; old age is approaching, and I now feel my decline. Human life observing the world has its own measure; all things change unpredictably. When can I raise a cup once more, bowing twice, making an appointment with the moon for next year? Stayed at Jiangshan.
78
A brief journey renews my original aspirations; a night stay brings peace and quiet. The mountain is empty, autumn sounds echo; people are silent, the night feels even longer. The humpback whale urges on the dawn's color, as a guest stirs deep reflection. He burned incense and paid homage to Bodhisattva. Zhi Ce climbed the perilous ridge, Huang Jinming stupa. Wuoyin is born into a Buddhist realm, and with his eyes he sees the heavens end before their time. The land turns over ten thousand qing of river water, recalling with deep emotion Emperor Liangwu. Once upon a time, Wenfaxi requested Master Niaochao Zhong to give a lecture; the Dao was in harmony with words spoken by oneself, the Heavenly Dragon Palace stood stately and majestic, golden and jade-like brilliance shining resplendently at its peak. I have come to prepare the tea utensils and milk tea for drawing water; I wish to stay beneath the mulberry tree together. After finishing my tour of scenic spots, I gazed back at the remaining sights returning from the horizon to the leisurely drifting boat through a wisp of smoke; on the ninth day, I ascended Fenghuang Tai.

The falling leaves startle the high autumn, a traveler's meal brings thoughts of military service; I feel ashamed to pluck the blue blossoms at an ancient shrine, their delicate buds not yet ready for picking. The cloudy mountains cannot be reached with my feet; such a fine festival seems truly 可惜 (regrettable). A single cry from the hundred-foot terrace, going to chase the wings that ride the wind. Mountains in groups, like jade pendants, thousands of ancient enclosures and solitary cities of the old country strike. Who remembers past events during the cold wave? How could jade trees possibly bear golden lotus flowers? They have vanished without a trace. The rise and fall has changed six dynasties, splashing blood nearly flies with arrows. Zhongtong flew up to heaven, and the pisa birds avoided the nets and arrows. He Nianlan Dehui, the ancient plaque is still legible. The elders have no means to inquire, and broken steles bear few remaining inscriptions. Only tears for ancient times remain idle, dripping alone before the slanting sun. Following the Original Rhyme: "The National Master's Thoughts on Seeing the Moon"

Laozi closed his gate and did not write books, faintly indeed resembling Cao Chu; the moon comes to the forest below, causing bitter longing for you. Recalling past days when peach blossoms first bloomed, I bade you farewell at the head of Zhangshui River; how long has it been since we parted? The Heavenly Affairs Office Roushou, six times the moon has rounded its arc in absence, how vast is the interval before we meet again? In a hundred years that flash like lightning, how many partings can one endure? When will we part once more? I miss you as one suffers from hunger and thirst. Hunger and thirst may have their time, but my thoughts of you know no season. A rustic man suffers in solitude; who can be close to me when we meet? Drifting and lost among the vast wilderness, hardships wound my spirit. We gaze at each other like Shen and Shang separated by distance—clouds and mud, grass and trees share only a faint scent. In laughter and talk, our longing reaches its peak; how long has this longing lasted? Step after step I turn back to look, turning back to see the line of migrating geese—among them, is there a letter from you?" In response to the rhyme of Ciqing Zhong, writing down what I see under the autumn moonlight.

The clouds freeze and the wind still blows fiercely; the sky is low and the snow has not ceased. The mountain is cold, and flying birds vanish; the river grows late, and a single cloak reveals the quiet dawn where plum trees first bloom. Letting the wind loose, curtain fluff drifts toward a solitary hawk; lost in distance, a foolish crane stands watching hungry gulls tethered to horseback returning swiftly with saddles, falconers' hawks hunting feathers strong as walls of Liaocheng buried in disdain, thousands of riders cold like Pixiu. Where can one return with a boat of lanhao? Who will wear the fishing robe? I shut the door out of pity for my illness; I compose a verse and entrust it to you. The auspicious signs appear as three whites; the year of Dengnian is in the ninth autumn. "When will it be that on a moonlit night we may travel together to Guanghan?" Written after reading "Poems of Qiannan by Fuweng."

The name of Ashang is originally without equal; drifting and falling, it truly became banishment to Yelang. Since early years, the waves are turbulent; words and intestines are brocade only. Now, my temples are once again streaked with frost; my name is passed on in the old country and still astonishes those present. My poems, when entering Fu Chuan, remain full in my satchel. Heaven has added elegant lines for Shaoling, thus teaching the exiled traveler to ascend Qu Tang.

In the same rhyme as Yuan, Kang He Bangshi is delighted; he returns from Qiantang. The Daoist regards him with favor and opens up for you once again. Liu Lang now comes back in a downpour of white rain, urging by West Lake, who holds the cup of drunkenness when adorned in red? Picking chrysanthemums at the fence, mountains stretch in thousands of layers; calling a boat at the ferry, the stream winds nine times around. I am afraid that I may soar across to Pengge, so I will try to find a small place for leisurely strolls beneath the pines.

They obtained the officials Qian Menghui, Mengshi, and others, who were foul and corrupt. Thus, it is said that worldly people love official positions as they love their lives; only this Daoist abandons office as he would discard mud. In the mind of a Daoist there are few thorns and brambles left; he plants only jujube trees and gives his name to pear blossoms, taking what is insufficient for himself. The saying is in "Zhen Gao". High office and rapid promotion are indeed perilous; suddenly, the fish beard enters your hands once more. Three decrees urge me to run along the wall in haste. By day I chant 琅函 with jade chimes, by night I wear a yellow hat facing the North Dipper. The celestial cloud chariot has long failed to come, and the elixir's sun and moon are but empty longevity. Mount Wu and Lake Chu lie far apart, east and west; With you, we share only a hurried laugh. We shall surely clasp hands for five hundred years, Polishing golden records as we reunite once more.

Recently I am delighted by Cui Sili's newly completed work, the Bei Guo Tang, where a small pavilion is built beside deep cliffs to invite guests for light drinking and sightseeing of flowers. Frequent shifting of bamboo beyond the wall, official duties are few due to a clean administration. The dream is deep, the birdsong long; vines lean on crooked branches. Fragrant leaves of yun turn in disorder. Ride and ask not about horses, old man with clumsy speech idly becomes an official. Hills and valleys are matters within my chest; heaven and earth become my hometown when I am drunk among people. Once playing and wandering about, forgetting each other, on the Yuanxi Festival I awoke from sleep.

On the Yuanxi Festival I no longer drink; on this cold night, with whom can I take pleasure? People followed a thousand horsemen out, and I faced solitude with only one lamp. If you have a dream, consult Huangni; if you lack affection, ask Zigu. Ao Shan is in the sky, looking across from afar through the central region. The golden embankment no longer ascends with faltering steps; why trouble to be vigorous and hold the reins of a horse? Follow me in contented crawling through the mud, watching from afar as he soars like a great peng at lofty heights. The spring scenery of Jinjiang can provide for intoxication; the fish upstream of Hao are also worth watching. Hearing that there is a flat sandbar inviting an evening stroll, I will surely follow the moonlight down to the edge of the woods."

"Worldly glory and fame, how could they not be good? Wei Lang's heart affairs are originally misty and rosy. Autumn winds naturally age a thousand chapters of trees; spring rains—who divides one toad into a section? The spring wind is powerless against willow blossoms, yet flowers wish to contend. Spring is filled with graceful intentions. The poems composed at the seat take on cloud-like forms, as people contend before the wine cups. Yu Chanjuan, Fengxiao chu nuan. The jade is graceful and delicate, the phoenix flute just warmed. The uneven bamboo clappers resound, still urging the large and small zithers. See "Yangzi Caoyuan" still residing in Hejian, with many good deeds and books. Alone I come to this place beneath the trees where we once met, Drunk among the flowers, just beginning to compose a verse. People have gone and do not know how red and brilliant it is. Lou Qingwu, Guke Fengwang, Sheng Shi Quan, Ping Yao Yi Nang Bi Hu Fan. His hair had already turned white at the front of his head, and he opened the door to welcome [guests]. I first tasted the guest wine among the bamboo in spring, later I came to know that countless flowers bloom from the mountains. In the eighth month, the vast land for a thousand li is red with the harvest of autumn; authority is light and one suffers from weakness. It does not permit the cold cicadas to embrace wind and dew, merely adding wings and feathers to autumn mosquitoes. The fan of the pandanus leaf is called upon, its wrist about to sway, while fine hemp garments are discarded yet sweat still drips. Who has sent the western wind at midnight? First it conveys news to the tall ginkgo tree.

He Libiao: The magistrate's plum trees bloom with Hu Shicao, rhyme "Jiangtou Xuewu zhi she jia?" The thunderstorm chills and stains the sky, contending for brilliance; I do not know which gentleman has closed the eastern pavilion. Sitting quietly, watching the river plum trees first bloom, spring returns to the valley bottom but has yet to fully penetrate. On a cold day, with thin sleeves and delicate posture, At dusk when the moon shines, who else would know? In all the world, no flower surpasses yours in beauty; A human life is but one month of how many gourds (a metaphor for fleeting time)? The branch still clings to my hand as frost fills the hair, Sitting alone by the lake without drinking wine, The recluse of West Lake remains only a hollowly thin figure. Knowing you do not emulate Cui Sili, You casually face a withered pine wearing only a simple head cloth. Though your heart is iron and cold, fragrance naturally prevails; Is there no joy in singing drunk to golden threads? In the morning, flowers were blooming and there was a new verse; when the poem was completed, Maibuyou would write it on the eastern wall. The tangerines are about to ripen, urging with long verses.

The mulberry trees sway gently half over the wall; thus troubling the recluse who is still not busy. The fine rain does not hinder the lush green of the unruly sprouts; the sparse curtain occasionally allows the fragrant scent to pass through. Who will take these noble golden grains, and place them into a white silk pouch filled with sweetness and sourness? Only if Heaven truly understands affairs would it first lend full forest frost.

Last year at night I hurried along the Three Hundred Pans, flying snow in the mountains spread widely by morning; not knowing that spring had ended in my dreams, there were still plum blossoms to be seen after getting drunk. This winter is warm and cold forces are weak; spring has already entered the plum twigs and they can be cut by now. I insert flowers and drink again from my old friend's wine cup, still managing to obtain a single branch for careful plucking. How could one know that thorny brambles avoid spears and halberds, yet still face the fragrant powder in amazement at tender beauty. Before the flowers, the Chu guest is wild and about to go mad; under the moonlight, the Wu ox is determined to pant. "Next year I still fear the bandits' connected camps, will scattered blossoms dare to fill my eyes? For now it is still possible to be drunk on the lingering fragrance; let the cups flow—do not mind their fullness when they reach you."

Song of the Chángpú Hill
120
The people of Nan live among the mountains, and every household has windows. There is a mountain named Wu Feng, and the number of Chuiqiao peaks cannot be counted. But see clouds buried in rain, washing away heaps of smoky hairpins; who would know that the rich and noble youths of Chang'an, with but a single fist, could carve out where the cloud roots lie. Yang Hou Shu Zao chiseled out rock caves; above them are mottled and cracked lichen patterns. Beneath are thousands of years without death, the rare grass and green herbs flourish abundantly; a foolish child holds this up with pride, while the young nobleman carries bricks and stones to ascend through the red gate in the morning. At dusk, he departed from the imperial gate with red banners in tow; Kaiyuan's peaceful era lasted twenty years. With no alarms on any side, there is no need to draw the bowstring; half of those in embroidered robes are flower and bird envoys. High officials avoid the way—how dare one speak? The great boat glides through spring waves of emerald green at Ke'e, as people everywhere vie to see the Taihu stones. Heaven's will does not permit the drying up of Taihu Lake; eight isles and ten thousand mouths in vain sigh. Piling stones to form a mountain as high as Hua Yue, myriad peaks and ridges prop up the azure sky. The crooked dragon soars aloft, embracing clouds and rain; it seems as if there is not even a hand's breadth between it and the heavens. A brocade-sailed boat flies eastward on the dragon-boat. The gardens of Xianyang lie empty and desolate, while the old man of Dulang laments at Jiangtou. The mountain of calamus grass—whom have you kept here?

The gate of Heng was locked again—who would open it? The thatched cottage showed no trace of war dust at all. The male wind slants and rolls away clouds, while the female rainbow stretches across to block the rain's return.
123
My family pities me for having no native place to call my own; you know of good deeds but are unaware of worldly feelings. Borrow a small window to place a quiet couch, lying and listening to the wind and rain blending with the sound of lotus leaves.

There was originally no road at Houtou Mountain below Longgu Stream. There were still windows along the side of the house, where lotus flowers could not be blown down by the wind in the rain, and mandarin ducks formed pairs on their own.

After the hantao fruit ripens, the orioles still speak; when willow fluff flies, swallows are also busy. The scenery is always wondrous with the seasons, yet one does not know that human feelings are also desolate.

Seeking refuge and secretly living out my days, I have closed my door; it is unbearable to be disturbed. The first couplet: "Drunk and grieving by the riverbank road, amidst rain-soaked leaves and wind-blown flowers, all is broken spirit."

Fleeing in haste, I weep through the night; In Liang Jun, west of Guo, I feel the peril of climbing among tangles of vines. The path is cut off, my staff sinks into deep mud, weary and exhausted. I cover my face, pitying my foolish daughter, yet ashamed before my old wife when she turns back. My soul still trembles with fear; let not the northern horses neigh too often. Heartbroken at the road I came from, I walk through a village in chaos after war—soldiers of earth and troops, Daytime is mocked by shouts, while a woman in the wild weeps at dusk; bandits have gone, but smoke lingers over houses where people remain. On my return day at Men Chongling there were forty thousand households, today how many families remain on Hanshi Festival?
129
Only a few days remain until Hanshi Festival, and the weather is still far from pleasant; light clouds drift vaguely, fine rain blows diagonally. Youth seems heartless, not coming to homes filled with sorrow. Suddenly, after clearing skies, the colors become vast and bright, the plains embroidered with fragrant flowers. A reckless young man on horseback, holding up the sky, shoots at the corners of the earth; white feathers cry out, geese and hawks fly, nets catch five female boars. One day I shall be appointed to cut down a giant whale, enfeoffed as marquis, beating drums and playing flutes in times of peril. Why should there not be poor scholars buried in cold sand and mud? With a stern and modest demeanor, he carries an air of chivalry; his thoughts linger on, filled only with sighs and lamentations.

In response to Chang Yuan's poem: "Xikeng Is Located by the Wild Mountains, Where One Finds Nineteen Springs of Qiuchi." A line of verse can summon rain upon a thousand hills, yet no one shares in fishing through the mist that blankets the plain.

A simple meal in the wild serves as a modest pleasure for an old man's plate, spring delicacies and choice vegetables make a fine soup. Crossing reeds and bamboo shoots, steamed buns served with locust sprouts; fish tails first hang down like sword-plant seedlings. The flowers have not yet bloomed; who said that Yu Lang is a vegetable? Gradually restricting tea, Emperor Ming Huang beats the Jiagu drum.

Beyond the palace walls, the song of a yellow oriole resounds; The imperial robe is adorned with golden hues. A melody named "Lizi" is played anew; Fragrant colors swirl around the sandalwood incense. White rain falls at Hua Nu's hand; Wind 鬃 dances on the horse's bed. Where is the former place of songs and music? It is Yuyang. Sending off Master Zhi.

The Daoist drank from the mountain stream; his countenance was rather graceful and refined. He managed a hermitage, content with his humble dwelling, setting aside all worldly affairs. Following the clouds of Tongfeng Peak, he descended to its summit, desiring to accomplish one great feat. Because of this intention, he was extremely courageous and determined. Many days passed in daylight; wolves and tigers lay across the path halfway, pits and traps were spoken of as graveyards. Who could protect their waist and necks among these treacherous woods? One must rely on the method to subdue demons and transform them! The Venerable Qingliang Jingshi did not initially speak lightly of worldly customs; he often warned himself to be diligent, purify the accumulated karma and grievances, and with his vows and power pervade all beings. His conduct was upright and cautious; do not tire of striving forward. I have long been secluded in the countryside; bandits run rampant, and I have not heard of any news for a long time. When Xin Zuoding came, I joyfully composed this poem following his rhyme scheme.

The martial aura coils around Canghai; the slanting sun sets in the evening woods. Soul wounded, spring petals fall like fluff; tears moisten the birds crying at dusk. Only with clothes tied together, completely without hair to pin up, my wretched life has already drifted about; as I grow old, the days press in even more. Tong Zhonggong and his brothers visited Zhao Xingke and arranged a banquet.

Leaning on a staff at the mountain-top temple, mooring my boat beneath the willow-lined dike; do not urge me to ride the golden yaozhiao, let us instead get drunk east and west of the jade. After the chaos, soldiers still fill the land; The wind startles birds that have not yet settled. Behold your vigorous intent— Both eyes fixed on the giant fish and leeches. Seated guests, three pines stand tall; Prince Wang's jade tree rises high. Wine and peace do not concern you all; Mountains close in upon us, companions of wandering sons. Where is a home for those without roots? The general's battle has not yet raged fiercely; when we meet, do not lose each other—numerous bandits are just like moss. Early summer.

"The willow fluff drifts along the long road, and spring lingers; green fills the calamus as summer begins." "The two butterflies do not come, and the flowers fall in clusters," "A single oriole occasionally appears among the sparse trees. In my life I have been too lazy to compose songs of willow branches, but all things can be divined by the long willow's book; only the old mountains are truly enduring, accompanying me idly as I linger."

Reeling from the sight of weapons and soldiers, I wandered about weary and exhausted, hating to dwell in valleys and hills. The general Shixing lifted the heavy siege, and the disorder was pacified, freeing people from suffering. With arms linked we gazed toward our native pass, young and old alike content with calloused feet. My native village has become a mound of ruins, and its gates and alleys are no more, their winding paths lost. Great trees have already become firewood; creeping grass is about to be tied up. The eastern neighbor killed an old man and woman, and the calamity was said to be most cruel. White bones lie among the grass, scattered and not belonging to one another. The families to the west fled in all directions, and prisoners, their attendants, and servants were captured. At that time Huangjin Nang turned his head and refused to redeem it. My close friends have mostly died or disappeared, and who will record these changes and events? Where can my whole family finally return? I lament being confined and constrained by circumstances. After a year of misfortune and a great military campaign, the dry air became increasingly scorching. The dry well cannot provide water for cooking, and how can filth be washed away without a bath? Not knowing how to treat a diseased body, how can one endure the sultry heat? Since the chaos began at Guan Shan, the bow of might has not yet been sheathed. Ten people out of ten have no home; how could it be their desire to wander and be scattered? What is a worm's life worth discussing? The main food has long not been jade. I only hope that hostilities may soon cease and all under heaven may live at peace according to their customs.

Straight virtue, why do you resent? Heaven's will—why am I alone doubtful?" "Old feelings have nowhere to rest, so once again I take up your poems. Each day ascending and gazing with open eyes, leaning on a cane, watching birds fly away alone; opening the window, suddenly the great river rushes in. Heartbroken, I cannot see Old Guxi who is ill, still seeking Songwu Terrace. In late years, no one comes to mourn the remains; half of the poems on the walls are covered with dust.

The night cries of crows echo within the Mingguang Palace; who dares to weigh the Han tripod's value lightly? The old donkey has not yet sweated blood through its ornate carving; all under heaven hold their noses and mourn the stench. At that time, seeking refuge was not a matter of choice; to dwell in caves and sleep by the water were all against my will. Who could have known that throughout the world there are no true hermits? Only this sentiment is uniquely noble, like that of Yan Ziling. A crescent moon shines through the rain on my straw cloak, peach blossoms bloom and spring river waters rise to level ground; my life is much like Yuan Zhenzi's, truly wishing to fish rather than seek fame. My old friend has already risen as a dragon in flight, yet still dons the sheepskin robe to fish among misty waters. In former times, Hou Ba could not be his equal, nor can one lightly compare him with the embroidered robes of high officials. He knows in his heart that he will not bow to worldly pressures; it is not for no reason that he does not seek the position of a Three-Peers official. Wealth and honor, floating or sinking, are only before our eyes. Holding the spear tightly, I have long pitied Zi Yangzi, a man of virtue and integrity. If one has not yet established himself, what is the use of merely recognizing strange characters?

The guest's thoughts often follow the tired birds back home; The emerald screen is but a dream of Xiao Chanyan. With my two weary eyes in old age, I come to see mountains unseen all my life: For whom does Xi Zi frown with distant eyebrows? Why has Xiang E tied her misty buns? In the thousand cliffs and myriad ravines where no one is found, Lies the leisure of Wanchuan's painted scroll.

The cold wind seeks to descend in arrogance, spring snow; the sky, drawing near, first casts its weight upon the clouds piling up at the tower's head into jade-like hues, blowing across the water surface to create ripples. How can a warm sun overcome this? Who will resolve the confusion of nurturing new blossoms? Only then did I hear the imperial decree, as if carrying down feathers from nine lofty heights; one should surely also think of the three armies.

The Hanlin Academy painted a drunk stone, oddly resembling Cang. Yu Tu and Longmian saw it and laughed as they painted "A Single Horse Bends the Curved Bow," saying this was a general going out to hunt at night. On top of it is Chouchi's running script, which reads: "Cloudy sands are vast; the sun is about to set. I met a crouching tiger in the southern mountain corner. In my heart I knew it was a tiger and not a stone. With both strings pulled tightly, they all shouted 'Lu Hu!' Tomorrow morning, white feathers will drink from stubborn stones, rubbing them until the golden pugusu is exhausted." You do not see that thousands of gold were bestowed; Xin Yuanying received six seals in succession. General Luan's great strategy to assist his sovereign was certainly not for you. Small matters like being enfeoffed as a marquis did not reach your master, whose words are wondrous and renowned throughout the world. For seven years in the malarial sea, his skin and flesh became rough and chapped. Fate brought together two outstanding figures, Su Shi and Li Bai; Cao Chu was as if born or dead. Longmian had eyes to recognize the heavenly man, and thus they achieved a wondrous tale across different ages. You should treasure it carefully and not casually copy it, for this person and this painting are unparalleled in the world—five kinds of bird cries.

The sound of flowing mountain water is incessant; spring birds chatter as spring mud becomes slippery from the rain. Who is it that speaks as the spring birds chirp, do not report? The mountain flowers droop as if about to rain, The cuckoo's cry is bitter; the traveler has no words. The guest wanted to leave and at night beat the drum near the bandit camp by the mountain. Who says Du Yu's return is a joy? Upon returning, everywhere there are no cities or walls. Spring days are warm, spring clouds thin; flying toward the setting sun which has not yet set, the spring mountains call out to each other in a pleasant manner.

The water in the field flows gently, urging the sowing of grain; bandits are now in the town, while farmers are in the mountains. In the same rhyme as Bo Yin's "The People Who Eat Distiller's Grains," to Zhao Pengxiang Ten years of warfare, nine harvests failed; Families with fields do not plant grain. All their marrow and blood are drained for military stores, Yet they must buy official distiller's grains to fill their starving bellies. The rich sell land, the poor sell wives; At night they suffer in stocks, at dawn they endure beatings. A long waist holds but one grain unswallowed, Still, government granaries remain constantly full. Once upon a time, money in the imperial treasury rotted for lack of use— Why do you officials persist in opening borders like those of Han? Since border horses drank from the river's water, We fear common folk will soon be left with only hunger. Yellow dust and white bones still fill our eyes; Who now stands before us clad in brocade robes and embroidered caps? Roasting lambs and stewing kids is by no means bad, but starving people eating bran are truly pitiable. How could the short clerk under the great general's banner be willing to serve as a protector for these common folk? One need not worry about officials who are clumsy in collecting taxes; rather, one might even remove his official robe and return home. Master Zhan is an old scholar of great talent, with high poetic achievements that have no equal in the world. How can I sing wildly until reaching enlightenment, commanding wind and thunder to purify all nine regions? Yet drive away the bandits to become good farmers, and return my Zhaoling's former population."

Taking refuge in the mountains to avoid bandits.
163
Amidst the chaos and disorder, things remain as they are; safety or danger remains uncertain. The rebellious Qiang people first shot at the moon, while bands of robbers suddenly gathered like clouds. Wondrous strategies belong to the generals, yet deep concerns weigh upon the holy sovereign. At Shuiling I encountered a drunken 尉 (wei), who should be an old general. Seeking refuge now still brings snow; relocating my family in spring only makes it deeper. How could there not be flowers before one's eyes? It is just that crows startle the heart. The tea leaves are tender and can be picked at leisure, while the fragrance of orchids must be carefully sought out. In the mountains there are secluded affairs; a green bull has not yet become prey. The night beacon lingers into the third month, and new worries multiply in hundreds of ways. My startled spirit weeps frequently from sudden rain, and my empty belly endures meals with the wind. Shooting pheasants is perilous in mountain dwellings, and dwelling near fox dens is difficult due to their stench. If enemies come, it can still be endured; but if bandits arrive, the damage will be unbearable. Today, the report of bandits has passed, yet below the mountain it still lingers slowly. The children wipe away tears and smile; with old eyes I glance at people in doubt. In dreams I enter my native pass many times, my soul should have left this body. One spring, three times fleeing from bandits; ten matters, nine ending in sorrow. Green hills twist and turn several times; going back and forth among a few families. Tanned hides urge to be made into paper; huddled around the roasting stove watching tea being dried. Only when the mountain ends do I see the sun; when the stream clears, sand occasionally reveals itself. Wuling is known to be just this place—across the river there are peach blossoms.
In the past, I built a house in Huagu Chuan; with a short straw raincoat and green cap, I tilled spring fields. One plow fell through the rain of Changye, while two oxen divided to sleep on spring grass. In the evening, returning home lying on the cow's back, small lanes and sparse woods still basked in daylight. Tying my cow under a willow tree, the gate was not yet closed. My neighbor brought wine and we got drunk by the cow. Looking back, ten years of past events vanished. Fields entered wealthy families' hands; oxen were sold for money. Grass overgrew spring fields, thieves burned houses down. With ten mouths to feed, our family had no single beam left. Eyes dimmed, head balded, everything went wrong. Seeing this painting once fills my heart with melancholy. Hejian is not a son of farmers; he reads much and can be compared to Tianlu (a deity). All his life, he tired of jade horses and fine steeds, drawing water buffalo just for fun. Calling from the north path and east field, he still did not return home, in vain sending word to peasants about spring matters. Looking at the moon over fields while watching Wu oxen, old man has always been like this. He should immediately unsheathe his sword, exchange it for four hooves to plow spring waters. After bandits passed, gathering up remaining books and writing thusly.

This life is but a short lamp's foolish delusion; even more ashamed are the funds spent on visiting the market. How could there be books from Ye still on the shelves, and no records by Ban to satisfy hunger? Today's passing sight has lost three chests; on another day I will return them and owe you one chi. "The scattered leaves in disorder hang from the suspended chime; is it that spring wind has deliberately deceived me?"

After the chaos, Wuyi Lane was already empty. I intended to find a thatched cottage to accompany an old man in mirth: "Carrying young ones away into the spring wind, beaks full of mud, returning through evening rains; no one minds the door despite the heat of power, coldly leaning beside others, speaking with skillful words. Remember this time next year, it should be peach blossoms blooming red throughout the courtyard."

Song of General Liu's Precious Sword.

The general's precious sword is three chi long, at midnight it shines like the red sun; who dares to touch the Blue Water Envoy? The Pengtou sword is such that scholars cannot recognize it; the oil of the bittern shines with autumn water's luster, cutting jade like mud without a flicker. On a night when the autumn wind howled like a dragon, people said it was indeed the true Ganjiang sword. Knowing you are from an old general's family with noble lineage, you discuss military affairs and matters of state as if books supported your intestines. You do not wish to wield this sword daily to slaughter three thousand oxen; rather, you would prefer to hollow out the Yuechi moon as a drinking vessel. Yet Chanchan jin tao chao Weiyang, yao yao luan, ling bu zi bao. Who is this fierce and old hound leaping about? When drunk, I rise to dance and speak for you. At such a perilous time, this sword knows who concealed it after the rain passed.

A light rain passes over the surface of the pool; the waist of trees is bathed in sunset. Clouds part to reveal a mountain's emerald hue, wind carries the fragrance of several lotuses.
Among horses there may be no Huailou, but among people how can there not be Cao Liu? A dragon steed has come from tens of thousands of li to the west; an extraordinary man appears once every three thousand autumns. Li Bai was exiled to Yelang for his poetry, and Tuizhi was banished to Chaozhou for discussing Buddhism. Heaven is laughable without old eyes; the two old men's haggard appearance fills one with sorrow. Throughout his life, Huang Taishi of the four seas was a man of great virtue; Changgeng paired with the moon—how could he ever die? The Xijiang has always been the chronicle of the southern lands. Gao Gong's name and governance were just like this. People say this old man is very similar to my uncle; alone among those present, he plucks a flower with joy. He has inherited one branch of the Jiangxi School; for all time, governance must be cleansed by him. My old self is addicted to poetry, growing thin and emaciated; the ruler's policies are like acupuncture for the blind. How could this person possibly have the intention to revive me? I received his letter along with a pouch of pearls.

Zhurong holds power and cannot be deprived; the sea water wants to boil, mountains want to split. A yellow-haired old father has seen many things, saying that with this body there is no such heat. How can an old man blame Heaven? Every day in Shantang, southern winds blow; A black gauze cap trims the clouds' leaves. White temples are blown by snowflakes, flying wildly and loosely. Already carrying sugarcane juice to quench heat and vexation, More still pour well-blossom water back for sleep's grace. The remaining dripping water urges the lamp to darken; wind through the wu trees sounds with rain, and listening closely startles a dream. Cheng Bi, courtesy name Huaigu, was a native of Xiuning and the fifteenth-generation descendant of Du Shi Yun. He was just ten years old when he composed a poem titled "Ode to Ice," which reads: "Do not say this thing is of no use at all; it once helped Han troops cross the Hutuo River." Those who recognized it found it remarkable. In the fourth year of Shaoxing, he was selected as a jinshi and appointed as an assistant official in Changhua. He passed the examination for erudition and eloquence and was assigned as an instructor in Jiankang. During Emperor Ningzong's reign, he was transferred to serve as the magistrate of Fuyang. The substitute official gave Bì a list of the names of powerful and unruly people in the county, but Bì put it aside without looking at it, saying: "I do not wish to know their names; if they hear about this and mend their ways, that will be sufficient." He was recommended and appointed to the Office of the Director of Genealogy, and soon afterwards served as an academician in the Hanlin Academy. In the early years of Emperor Lizong's reign, he concurrently served as an Attendant Reader and was appointed Minister of Rites. In the first year of Shaoding, besides requesting a post at a shrine, he was appointed as Zhaobushi of Fujian Lu. At that time, rebels in Ting and Shao were active; Bi used both authority and trust, and the pacification was expected to be achieved within a set period. However, there were those who envied his success, so he repeatedly submitted memorials requesting retirement and eventually retired as a scholar of the Duanying Pavilion. He later died. Bi was renowned for his literary talent during his time. His family originally hailed from Ming Zhou, He Bei, and he styled himself as "Yimin of Ming Shui." He had a collection of thirty volumes.

For ten days, the rain buried the green hills; today morning, I bathed in new sunlight. Old red petals fell into myriad calamities, tender green leaves arranged themselves in thousands of rows. Leaves shattered under the green 槐 tree, ancient branches purified with the fragrance of purple wisteria. Last year I protected bamboo shoots, and this year they have already turned into verdant bamboo the bamboo sprouts before Right Historian's window; last year I took great care to protect them, and now they are all green bamboos. Fluttering, a magpie led its young one, while sparrows circled the wall with symbolic grace. All was bright and joyful, yet at this moment many emotions arose. Outside the gate, carriages and horses were noisy; within the government office, days passed slowly. One must seek what is truly great joy—only then can it be called true joy. In Canglang, Canglang rises; how boundless are the wind-swept sails and ten-zhang masts. Tomorrow I will drink with Master Yan Yan enters Hui Prefecture; Fuqiu flies southward toward Nanxiang Fuqiu ascends to Huangshan in Hui Prefecture, a swift horse gallops past green hills, as if entering Wansong Zhuang Xianlu. Many old men dwell in the mountains; on snowy peaks, eyebrows are even more prominent. Holding wine, they warmly entertain me; children bustle about to welcome me. I briefly rest and listen to the snow in the wu. All of the following are scenes and objects found in the mountains. Xu Bu Duiyun Xiang Yujie Mei, Wan Ben Yanhai Shan Qian Zhang, Sanxia Taoyuan Lang, Jiuxia Bingyan Shuang, Weiqiao Kua Changhong, Qushui Fei Qingshang, Liang Ri Zu Ke Zhou, Bai Nian Shi Nan Liang. Seeing guests out of Songguan Pass, strong bolts were set by the door; waving hands to bid farewell to the people of the world, from now on we will forever forget each other.

External things are not to be relied upon; in a hundred years of upheaval, only ten thousand volumes of books can relieve my face. A man's value lies in setting his aspirations; the enlightened one attains a grand view. Rivers and streams flow day and night, meeting the sea in waves. Hills and mounds rest content with their lowliness; how could they dare to compare with Mount Tai? In our youth, hair and teeth are yet undimmed. The halls of sages and worthies stand wide open; everyone can ascend them. Be cautious not to follow the common crowd, rushing aimlessly through life's enclosures. "Farewell, Chang Shiqing, as you return to Jiaxing."

Regretful was my journey to Tanshan, where the mountains are deep and friendships hard to find. Suddenly we met, suddenly we parted; how pitiable is this person of ice and jade, like cold plum blossoms sparse with snow. His chest holds Lu Wengui's writings; his brush shines with brilliant patterns. The court yearns for outstanding talents, setting high nets still. Go forth and reap rare achievements; strive to follow the deeds of your ancestors. A volume of loyal and righteous deeds, evil sprouts lamented as they are first broken. After a thousand years, the timid man's soul transforms; brittle bones become extraordinary virtue. Recognizing this marvel of Wu Zhong is indeed fortunate to pay homage to former sages. How different are they from Lu Guo people who in one day obtain two jade pendants? The bright clouds arise from Zhi Tian, and the eastern wind urges the crying jays. Citi has recently written a letter; tomorrow morning he will set out on his return journey. New sprouted grass can be used as a mat, tender dewy flowers are worth picking. "I miss you again and again, the moon at the edge of heaven on the coming night."

The sages of old had clear words: the people of Jin did not reach understanding; this body is all provisional and compounded, once it has dispersed, what need is there for a spade? The great sound does not lie in the zhenqin; where then should it be established? At that time, escaped wine-drinkers often feared aggression, and when Huozhai struck the drum, the sea winds and waves would rise or subside at will.

The construction of the encampment had not yet ceased, and they paused at dawn and dusk in Songqu. Suddenly I heard the sound of a funeral carriage returning from Hangzhou and Huzhou; cold rain persisted without clearing, making the mountain paths muddy as if coated with sludge. Passing through five hundred rapids with ease, Turning the axle to ascend the celestial road. Sincere filial piety reaches the heavens, and peace is as if laid out on a mat. I recall my kind ancestors; in June, summer heat was just departing. Though a hundred jugs of sacrificial wine be poured out, the Lianxi cauldron dries up in drought. Today I trace back against the strong wind, Xinju is surely as before. His virtue and reputation were renowned; his benevolence overflowed into the neighborhood. The hands of a thousand gold do not sell their Zhong; later generations, by heavenly appointment, have been given this stone well. A glance and it becomes my dwelling, and yet again it is measured to level ten thousand households. The guardian dwelled in great desire; one drew the red silk mountain cold obstruction forward, Huang Luo sent golden purple peak off, eyes only hesitated.

Red clouds, a single blossom of incense from the golden censer; yellow parasols stand tall as the gong announces noon. The dragon bed is still in use at Jinhua Palace, where scholars are just being summoned to read the precious scrolls, which also contain records of Emperor Shenyao's words. In the thirty-sixth year, the old ways were truly restored; now, what need is there to read the remaining books? Zhuo Rensi restored Guangqian's former endeavors; the high emperor, on that day, overcame hardships, still in the midst of planning and preparation not yet complete. Today, the land of Shandong and Hebei is once again returned after a hundred years. There remains also the imperial seal passed down by our ancestors, carved during the Yuanyou Longping era. The jade's light shines toward the sun; its inscriptions soar like clouds flying. Today it gleams resplendently upon the throne. The high emperor smiles from heaven; his divine grandson revives prosperity today and is granted a thousand autumns and ten thousand years of longevity. Armies are cleansed, harvests abundant. Some ministers still murmur in complaint, while I, a lowly subject, merely bow my head in reverence. Fragrant banquets and splendid honors reach even the dragon steeds; they too kneel in procession from heaven's gate. I also recall the former dynasty's thorough lectures. I have a minister named Shi Ganyu, who expressed his gratitude and devotion by wishing to compose an invitation letter for the Zhaolaizangpu under the shade of the Purple Crape Myrtle blossoms. Now, they arrive by boat and ladder, admiring Central China, no longer needing any further invitations. The humble minister Dan Moqian zhangsong, respectfully continues the noble verses of Ji Fu on the revival.

Du Ling had already drunk himself into old age; a hundred years after Po Xian was born, I regret not having known that when my eyes opened wide in the great western river of Jiangxi, I suddenly saw Master Gong Zheng standing there. He wore his cap and head covering with solemn dignity, so pure and lofty that no breeze could reach him. For a thousand years, timid men have been left trembling and without flaw; at times he slightly exhaled clouds from within his chest, causing the nine heavens to become five-colored yet indistinct. Holding music for three thousand people, he did not count the seven hundred stones of wine materials, but grandly gathered treasures into his dan tian (elixir field). Returning home to visit Lufu's thousand-fathom greenery, who would have known that Xiangru lived in the city? I only believe there is Taibai east of the city. At once, all lesser men retreated like ying birds; my family has several sons passing on the orthodox lineage. All worldly dust and ten thousand kalpas are ground away, but alone remains a poetic connection without end. Heaven wishes to keep Master Gong in this world, managing wind and moon as an eternal guest phoenix. One cry stilled heaven and earth—how can I allow late-arriving subtle verses to be accommodated? How could it merely be that green mountains swallow the dew from a single leaf? In the winter of Gengxu, three days of wind and rain blocked the way at Jiaoshi, where Ya Laohu displayed a proud aura of killing. Alas, for three days the wind and rain have stirred up chaos; each day is cold, with no flame-like clouds fleeing away. The heavens and earth tremble like ants turning in the southeast high, the violent force already surging as a rushing tidal wave; its lingering power still rolls up the thatched huts of Shaoling. Fish and turtles are terrified to death while dragons wail; lives on board the boat are as light as goose feathers. Rise up and stand on the riverside, where white sand and yellow dust fly in confusion; slowly summon the wind god into the reeds and wormwood, pointing and commanding to establish six tortoises reaching all eight extremes. Who among us can control the bellows and the taoyue? The peaceful winds do not stir the willow branches.

Fu Chi Daxin Jiang Qianli, three days drunk and lying under the smoke-covered boat 篷, at dawn pushing open the boat 篷 to ascend the broken bank, recalled Mu Zhi calling out with clogs in hand. Ji chi Jiu Hua Longlong Zha, Tianji low with faint clouds, passing through uneven steps of a hundred, called out to Mu Zhi as if unheard, peeling off dust-stained wrist marks revealing writings. This year in October, the sky has not yet frosted; leaves on trees retain the dew's light. Yiyi's rise and fall is a matter of fleeting fame, not worth discussing; the towering cypresses and strange rocks remain as they are. Today I ascend with you to the lofty peaks, drinking wine and composing poetry: "Who among those who come later will be like this?" "Past the western sun, returning on the road to Furong water."

The world's eyes see few true lotuses; the true lotus, however, grows in the glassy marsh. The Huanhua Stream flows into the Milky Way—how many can recognize the moon's brightness? Though Zhe Xian is unseen, one sees plum powder and dense lotus leaves plucked to make a peony robe. When did Huanglong's dry leaves fall? Vimalakirti's rain blossoms fragranced the night before. True flowers and true poetry have always been before our eyes; one must first have a clear and cool mind. Is it not the cold clarity of Xiao Xiang's waters, where moonlight shines on the sandbar and evening dew gently rises? I advise you to stop asking about Zhang Zifang—the lotus fragrance drifts for ten li along Jianhu Lake. The celestial steeds leap across the river, and the night is not yet over; why do you compare yourself to the light of Taibai? When will we clasp hands and discuss our paths—retreat or advancement—and where in Jiangdong are the clouds gathering as dusk falls upon the sky.

Beneath the Chilong Feng peak lies Wansong Mountain, where among its expanse dwell wandering folk in leisurely ease; to the left a rainbow bridge spans upward toward Xuanpu, while to the right one rides upon the back of an ao turtle across the flying pass. From deep ravines flow springs that spray like the Three Gorges, and torrents of peach blossoms churn white waves like snowflakes. The two mountains face each other as brocade screens unfold; crimson and purple hues still dazzle with white. Ten li of pine wind, a hundred birds' songs like the zither's notes; A red book and one pillow lie beneath the waning spring. Who will join me in forming the Society of No Birth? Slowly, green clouds descend with jade qilin below. The Nine Flowers rise abruptly while Kuanglu recedes baldly; Deep and secluded, it's as if entering Pan Gu. One night by Huai Mountain turns my hair white like frost. The painting depicts a misty landscape entering Luoyang; how could such an ethereal realm tolerate the defilement of ordinary bones? In haste I draft celestial verses on my return journey; Grinding pine and carving stone, I sing of peace and prosperity—also expressing a humble minister's gratitude for the nation's grace.

Your servant reverently considers that Your Majesty, the Son of Heaven, possesses a most sagacious nature and follows the plans of previous sage rulers. With solemn divination, you have chosen the new yang (positive force), initiating grand ceremonies with utmost seriousness. Heaven and Earth jointly partake in the offerings; ancestors and progenitors are equally honored. Clear light shines upon auspicious radiance; winter nights grow warm as spring evenings. Candle flowers appear like clusters; incense smoke remains still without movement. Praises resound along the heavenly avenues, noble winds reach even to the Yusu border. Your servant, though burdened with guilt in his literary duties, is fortunate enough to serve at these ceremonies and personally witness such magnificent and glorious achievements! I have carefully composed five poems to celebrate success. One chapter describes a grand ceremony. The second chapter: The jade carriage is like Qingcheng. Three chapters elevate Yuanqiu; four chapters complete rites. The fifth chapter speaks of Heaven's favor and holy virtue growing ever more abundant. Daring to offend the majesty of Heaven, I prostrate myself in fearful submission. The ancients frequently spoke of Liu Yansui's fiery days; some differ in their temples and altars. In the Tang dynasty there was a fixed system, which our Song dynasty followed as ritual for successive emperors' ancestral halls. The virtuous virtue of His Majesty is answered by Heaven with clear blessings. With reverence I contemplate that this great ceremony under Your Sacred Majesty's reign corresponds to an auspicious era. We have selected and purified the original temple site beforehand; sincere devotion has passed through the Grand Palace. Eight deities open up the gates, ten thousand horsemen accompany the grandeur of Fenglong, holding the path clear with a refreshing breeze. Hong Yili ri hong, Kang Qu ting xi yu, Ba cai geng zhong tong, Ya qian you wei jin, Yu mian si xian xu, Jun ji fei ping bu. The jade gua is held upright and supported by the yue; auspicious light surrounds the highest heavens, harmonious qi rises over the sky region, and blessings drink as smoke ascends already. The spirits of the welcoming deities are filled with auspicious signs, Purple altars and sacred halls rise in reverence. Azure dragons accompany the imperial carriage back from the border dust; Lightning clears a decade of bountiful harvests. Crimson phoenixes spread their grace across heaven's dew, The eastern court presents jade cups in homage. Before the pavilion, ten thousand years are called out, A thunderous sound stirs like spring thunder. It is said that only the sage can be honored; With sincerity one may truly reach the heart of Heaven. Now I respond to the sacred will of the Sage, And further pray for Heaven's nature to remain diligent in virtue. I humbly request even greater trust in the wise and virtuous, A foolish minister offers utmost loyalty—this is my earnest wish at Ganchuan. Two Elegiac Poems for Empress Xiansheng Cilie.

On the day when the western Hu all came, it was the time of greatest prosperity for the eastern court. The carved bow pacifies the Black Sea; the colorful brush shines upon the vermilion terrace. Long Qixian cai Fei Dancheng, bu yong yi ren jian kong chang. Gazing at the wind and moon, feasting in 瑶 chi, the sacred ancestor's arduous endeavors, the great-grandson enjoys protective grace. The Jade Consort Xianbao Jian, Immortal maidens present golden roots. Yao yao long xian qu pian pian, Feng you fan, Tu shan wang. Yao Xue Ruyue Wanchun Cun, a eulogy poem for Emperor Guangzong.

Tired of hearing worldly music urging completion, the red clouds over the sea part to reveal a white carriage. The red 鸾 phoenix under the heavenly halberd, the morning mist over the cedars of Wu Ye is faint; the cold dragon boat at night in Xianyang. Wherever it goes, clear blood surges and dries red. Elegy for Empress Guangzong.

Yu Suo bid farewell to the jiao palace, and Yaogong visits Guanghan. People on earth were just wishing for a swallow, when suddenly a phoenix flew down from heaven. The weak water and the Three Mountains lie apart; Huaxu, a dream left incomplete. Where sacred feelings gather in longing gaze, Immortal chariots ride through clouds at the end of the heavens. On the tenth day of the intercalary fifth month, Dinghai year, returning from Zhenshengdaofang by carriage, I record this: Rows of barriers like screens, converging springs with jade sashes encircling; Three cubits dense within, ten isles wide without. Heaven's will drives tigers to crouch, human hearts behold the sacred toad. Trouble you, invite old hermits, come here together by the murmuring stream. Wrote two poems at Fuyang Puzhao Temple.

The scenery surpasses Youjing, since Pan Gu was exiled and became famous. From the time of Jiangguo to the old Po year, the mountain top still has purple smoke at the tower's head. The moon is thus round; continuing to know this now. Rob and plunder things, even more relying on Renshi love. The ancient Zhaoti Temple who could have known of this change in custom? Though the Chunsu Temple was hot, it still belonged to the people of the Han dynasty. The monk Dingdu. The guest Lin is forgotten, spring is deeply locked away. After a thousand years I have come and found another person who has written an inscription later, climbing at night onto Diao Shi (the Fishing Stone).

I often recall Master Yan Junlai, who returned to seek the stone where he once fished. The neighbor's rooster crows just as the moon appears and geese fly by; it is precisely at this moment that I write poetic lines under the sky. The clear and elegant sound of a white-clad immortal harmonizes in response, bringing great joy. It is truly delightful to spread out my collection of writings, like releasing a boat on the Five Lakes while slowly drawing up with Master Xu Tiju.

His character is truly bold and generous, his natural talent still sets a model for punishment. The daytime curtain hangs deep over the courtyard, and spring banners surround the suburban tents. The clouds' children, a thousand boats of white, salt smoke from ten thousand stoves turns blue. The biography of a learned man from Nan Zhou, three sighs and one carving into nothingness. For more than a hundred years, Xining and Xiangwang have looked toward each other; again there is someone like Gu Tie, as the sun sets, still cherishing tonight's bright moon on the road. The old mountains remain unharmed in their crimson red hue, wild fruits piled onto plates, pink-white poetic plaques filling the walls. For several years they have been planted in rows, exuding a pure fragrance; today the title is inscribed and thus becomes a hall. Far away, toward Songgang, old shade is divided; nearby, from Juwan, cold fragrance is borrowed. Sailing together on a painted boat is like ascending to immortality; Yet one laughs at the muddied horse that refuses to advance. To recognize the cold mist hastening Grain Rain, one must know that a faint moon nourishes blooming flowers. Yu Gui, courtesy name Xixi, was a native of Qiandang. He passed the jinshi examination in the fifth year of Shaoxing. He once served as a governor by the sea, where government affairs were arduous and the people stubborn; Gui handled them with ease, without neglecting poetry. He exchanged poems and writings with Ju Tan, Wu Weixin, Yunju Chen Qi. Three volumes of Yu Xi Shi Gao, with brief annotations, "The style and bones are cold and clear like clouds on Dongshan Mountain." There is a small garden for cultivation, daily visits are made, one need not worry about having no land to plant; plum blossoms by the riverbank and clouds are as casual as ever. "Still ascend to a higher floor and gaze greedily upward; the river tides will not permit returning to the best." His poetry is especially good at quju (four-line poems), so the collection contains more of these than classical regulated verse, even surpassing "Banyu Yin."

To subdue my own mind, there is no better method than to resist external demons. The more I labor over my poetry, the clumsier it becomes; the harder I focus on each character, the more errors I make. The green robe has faded with time, and my white hair has thinned; I am a man of no talent, cast aside by the world. I merely recite poetry to while away the hours, dispelling my sorrows in the rain.

"The wind blows down the willow catkins; spring is over. The small pond's new greenness bears traces of rain." "At the time of bathing silkworms, cold still lingers; in village homes, half the doors are closed."

The rose has already faded, the peony is about to descend the slope; at noon, the shade turns to fine trees. The scenery still resembles spring and summer; each day I compose poems to recite by the gate, without common visitors passing by bamboo shoots. This year there are few lotus leaves; the small pond is full of spring. Only a few days have passed since I left, and already summer clouds tower overhead. Alas, my years have made me old! My life's affairs are but a laughing matter, full of delays and regrets. "But I only wish to lie down on the white stones, in the secluded cliffs and touch the green vines; my heart has already made arrangements, there is no need to ask how?" I follow the rhyme of Master Zhongyun.

The morning market is filled with soft red dust, while the mountain forest carries a deep fragrance. I let my mind wander as wild cranes fly past; spring birds sing in my ears. The stone stream echoes with jade-like spring water, and pine needles fall under the shade of the sun. In seclusion there are no worldly affairs—only the heart for cultivation and reading by the river.
327
Light rain has just stopped and the sun gradually tilts westward. At places where wine banners are planted, there are only two or three households. The scenery along the riverbank is decorated with autumnal views; half of it consists of reeds and half of it is composed of knotweed flowers.

The lotus has not yet been plucked; the fragrance of osmanthus drifts. As the setting sun and western wind carry geese past the tower, a rainstorm leaves empty steps dripping through the long night—ten parts of autumn bring ten parts sorrow.

"A single leaf blown by the wind announces the coming of autumn; the jade dews and golden winds are just in time. Wearing a cool cap and donning rustic clothes, I read Tang poetry amidst the fragrance of osmanthus blossoms."

The western wind, bleak and desolate, enters the boat's window as guests part ways; sorrowful wine fills the jars. One must remember this moment of separation, when evening mist and fine rain pass over Songjiang.

After the rain, it cleared up anew; as the sun turned westward, there was still clumsiness between the mulberry trees. The turtledoves cry ten times, and the sorrowful feelings have no one to share with. The river is full of red pampas grass, and the yellow reeds line the stream.

It is laughable to compose a poem about the four sorrows, yet I force myself to drink with Huanbo to relieve my worries. "The night is long, the bright moon shines through the gauze window, cold and clear; it divides the autumn in half with the sound of the cicada."

The raindrops came from the mountain ridges, the stream's mark, the riverbank sand swelled; many wine-drunk corpses were stuck with flags, nets hung empty. From the fishermen's land emerged tender bamboo shoots. The garden harvests cress seeds; the plum blossoms return in spring, and the orioles chirp lazily. The wind is brisk, swallows fly askew as cups pour out; green lotus leaves in small bowls brew white jade tea. A solitary village with flowing water at dusk, a few points, crows return home on an autumn night.

The moonlight is like water, pure and free of dust; a thousand li of longing are all in one heart. The lattice fence, entwined with vines and latticed by the sky, hums on without end; it has woven a depth of autumn feeling ten times deeper.

I am now of no use, an old man; I recite poetry to pass the time with my white hair. A hundred years pass like a film, all worldly affairs entrusted to the sandpipers. A quiet nature prefers tranquility; poverty brings constant worry. Human feelings are hard to fathom, just like the old gate's waters flowing eastward—this is where I find my return.

The water stirs up waves in the Yangtze River, and the wind carries the distant temple bell. Official feelings and autumn intentions are thin, returning 兴致 is thick with guest sorrow. Roll up the bamboo mat. Welcoming the new geese, the fence is noisy; tired of the old cicadas. When will I return to my hometown, carrying wine and planting lotus flowers?
