2	好花謾道護深深，景物撩人大不禁。 People often say that beautiful flowers are well protected in secluded places, but the scenery and objects provoke emotions too intense to bear.
3	嬌蕊纔經風雨蝕，幽香又被蝶蜂侵。 Tender petals have just been eroded by wind and rain; subtle fragrance is further tainted by butterflies and bees.
4	縱無遊子相將折，爭奈詩人佻達吟。 Even without wandering sons to pluck them, how can one resist the poet's frivolous verses?
5	細與東君弔今古，幾枝絕不露春心。 Carefully I accompany Dongjun in mourning past and present; a few branches never reveal their springtime feelings.
6	話說蘇有德，探知蘇友白與白小姐婚姻有約，便心懷不良，要於中取事。到次日二人起來，吃了早飯，蘇有德就叫將出外的行李不要動，又取出白銀二十兩，與蘇友白道：「些須盤纏，兄可收拾了，只要速去速來，不可耽擱，白公性傲，恐有他圖，雖小姐亦不能自主。」蘇友白道：「承兄相助，又蒙大教，感激不盡，小弟到京，只求得吳公一封書，就星夜回來了，倘僥倖成全，皆仁兄之賜也。」說罷，就叫小喜收拾行李起身。蘇有德又叫一個得力家人吩咐道：「蘇相公此間鄉村，徑路不熟，你可送到江口，著蘇相公渡了江，方可回來。」家人領命，蘇友白作謝了，竟自欣欣上馬進京。不題。 It is said that Su Youde, having learned of the betrothal between Su Youbai and Lady Bai, conceived ill intentions and plotted to interfere. Master Bai has an arrogant nature and may have other intentions. Even though the lady cannot decide for herself, we must not linger." Su Youbai said, "I appreciate my elder brother's help and also your kind instruction. I am deeply grateful. Upon arriving in the capital, all I seek is a letter from Master Wu, after which I will return posthaste. If by good fortune this matter is successfully completed, it shall be entirely due to my kind elder brother." After saying so, he ordered Xiao Xi to pack the luggage and prepare for departure. Su Youde then called a capable family servant and gave instructions, saying, "Master Su is unfamiliar with the roads in this area's villages. You must accompany him to Jiangkou, see that Master Su crosses the river, and only then return." The servant accepted the order. Su Youbai expressed his thanks and joyfully mounted his horse to proceed to the capital. No further mention is made of it.
7	原來吳翰林奉詔還京，擇了吉日起行，不期剛出城，官府祖餞辛苦，不覺感冒些風寒，忽然大病起來，只得依舊回家醫治。病了月餘，方有起色。蘇有德在城中回來，知此消息。恐蘇友白進城問知，竟自去求他，更不好做手腳，故三言両語𢬵着三十兩銀子，就攛掇蘇友白進京走空頭路，他好獨自行事。正是： Originally, Master Wu Hanlin had been ordered by imperial decree to return to the capital and selected an auspicious day for departure. Unexpectedly, just as he was leaving the city, officials held a farewell banquet in his honor. He became slightly chilled from the exertion and soon fell seriously ill, forcing him to return home for treatment. After being ill for more than a month, he finally began to show signs of recovery. Su Youde returned from the city and learned of this news. He feared that Su Youbai would enter the city to inquire and approach Wu directly, which would make it difficult for him to interfere. Therefore, with a few words and gestures, he gave thirty taels of silver as an inducement, encouraging Su Youbai to go to the capital in vain, so that he himself could act alone. It is indeed:
8	奸人一笑一奸生，哄弄愚生若戲嬰。 A cunning man, with one smile and one deceit, deceives the naive as if playing a game with an infant.
9	誰識老天奸更甚，借他奸計代愚營。 Who knows that Heaven itself is even more cunning? It uses his deceptions to manage the affairs of fools.
10	卻說蘇有德打發了蘇友白北行，滿心歡喜，道：「我正思量白小姐，千思百慮再無計策，不想今日有這等的好機會送將來，可謂天從人願。」遂打點一副厚禮，竟進城來去拜吳翰林。到了門前，叫家人尋見管門的，先就是五錢一個紙包兒遞過去，然後將名帖禮帖與他，說道：「我家蘇相公要求見老爺，煩你通報一聲。」管門的道：「我家老爺病纔好，尚未曾見客，只怕不便相見。」家人道：「老爺見與不見聽憑，只煩大叔通報一聲就是了。」管門的因收著書兜，又看見是送禮了，遂不推辭，因說道：「請相公裡面廳上坐，等候我進去通報。」家人得了口語，就請蘇有德換了頭巾藍衫，竟進廳來，隨將禮物擺在階下。管門人拏了兩個帖子竟進後廳來。 Now, after sending Su Youbai northward, Su Youde was overjoyed and said, "I had been thinking of Lady Bai for a long time, worrying endlessly without any plan. I never expected such an opportunity to come my way today—it is truly as if Heaven has granted my wish." He then prepared a generous gift and went into the city to visit Master Wu Hanlin. Upon arriving at the gate, he ordered his servant to find the gatekeeper and first handed over a small package of five qian as a bribe. Then he gave him the visiting card and gift note, saying, "My master Master Su wishes to request an audience with you, sir. Please trouble yourself to announce it." The gatekeeper said, "My master has only just recovered from his illness and has not yet received guests. It might be inconvenient to meet." The servant said, "Whether or not the master wishes to see him is entirely up to him. We only trouble Uncle to announce it." Because the gatekeeper had received the bribe and also saw that a gift was being presented, he no longer refused. He said, "Please, Master Su, wait in the hall inside while I go to announce your arrival." After receiving permission, the servant led Su Youde inside, where he changed into a headcloth and blue robe. He then entered the hall, followed by his servants who placed the gifts at the foot of the steps. The gatekeeper took the two notes and went directly into the back hall.

He thought to himself, "This person has never been known to me before; today he suddenly sends such a generous gift. There must be some reason for it." He then called in the gatekeeper and gave instructions, saying, "You go tell Master Su that I have just recovered from my illness and it is inconvenient for me to perform formal courtesies, so I have not received guests. Master Su's visit must be of great importance; if there are no urgent matters, we may meet on another day." "If it is a matter of official business, you may convey the message directly. I cannot accept such generous gifts and will return them along with the visiting card." The gatekeeper accepted the order and came out, carefully conveying the message to Su Youde. Su Youde said, "If that is the case, I trouble you, Master Gatekeeper, to convey this to my respected master. The reason for my visit today is regarding the marriage matter of my younger brother Su Youbai; there are many complicated details which can only be fully explained in person. Since my master is inconveniently unable to receive guests today, I shall naturally return on another day. However, these humble gifts must certainly be accepted. Please trouble again and convey this personally." The gatekeeper came in once more to report the message. Upon hearing about Su Youbai's marriage matter, Master Wu Hanlin said, "Go ask again—could Su Youbai be the one who topped the recent examination held by Academician Li?" The gatekeeper went out to inquire and then returned, replying, "Yes, it is him." Master Wu Hanlin said, "Since that is the case, please invite Master Su to meet me in the back garden." The gatekeeper hurriedly came out and said, "My master has asked for Master Su to meet him in the back garden." He then led Su Youde out of the main hall, turned around to the back garden, and brought him into a pavilion where they sat down. In no time, Master Wu Hanlin came out supported by a young servant. Su Youde saw this and quickly moved a chair forward for him, saying, "Respected master, please take the upper seat; allow your humble student to pay his respects." Master Wu Hanlin said, "My body is still unwell and cannot endure the fatigue. If we were to be bound by formalities, it would actually show a lack of care. A simple bow from head to toe will suffice." Su Youde replied, "Your esteemed master's words are most kind; I dare not disobey. However, it would be a great offense if I were to appear too disrespectful." And so he performed a bow from head to toe. Master Wu Hanlin then asked Su Youde to change into formal attire before they could sit down and exchange pleasantries.
12	茶罷，吳翰林就問道：「適纔所說諱友白的，這位原來就是令弟？」蘇有德道：「雖非同胞，實族弟也，少年狂妄，不諳世務，向蒙老恩師再三垂青，而反開罪門下。後宗師見斥，實乃自作之孽，而老恩師不加嚴督，反憐而赦宥之，真使人感恩戴德，慚愧無地。每欲泥首階前，因無顏面，故令門生今日代為請荊。」吳翰林道：「向因一時瓜葛之私，願附賢豪，不意令弟少年高才大志，壁立不回，愈覺可敬可愛，返而思之，實老夫之愆，令弟何罪。但不知今日何得復言及親事二字。」蘇有德道：「舍弟一時愚昧，自絕於天。久之自悔自悟，始知師臺之恩，天高地厚，每欲再托根於門墻之下。近聞令媛小姐已諧鳳卜，具道無由，今不得已而思其次，訪知令親白司空老先生，有一位令甥女，年貌到也相訪，妄意僥倖倘得附喬，猶不失為師門桃李，然門楣有天淵之隔，此自是貧儒痴想，但素沐老恩師格外憐才，故不惜腆顏有請，不識老恩師可略其前辜而加之培植否？」 After the tea was served, Master Wu Hanlin asked, "Just now you mentioned someone named Youbai. Yet instead of strict discipline, my esteemed master showed compassion and forgave him—this has made me deeply grateful and ashamed beyond words. I have always wanted to prostrate myself before your steps, but I lacked the face to do so. Hence, today I sent my humble student to offer an apology on my behalf." Master Wu Hanlin said, "At the time, due to a personal entanglement, I wished to associate with a man of virtue and talent. Unexpectedly, your younger brother is a young man of great ability and lofty aspirations, firm in his principles without yielding. Reflecting on it now, this makes him even more admirable and lovable. In fact, the fault lies entirely with me; how could your younger brother be at fault?" "But I wonder why you have now brought up the matter of marriage again." Su Youde said, "My younger brother was foolish and ignorant at that time, cutting himself off from Heaven's favor. After some time, he repented and realized his mistake, finally understanding the depth of your grace, as boundless as Heaven and Earth. He has long desired to once again take root under your esteemed door." Recently, I heard that your esteemed daughter has already been matched with a husband through auspicious divination. As there is no other way to proceed, and now out of necessity, we have considered the next best option. We learned that Master Bai Sikong, your respected relative, has an niece whose age and appearance are quite suitable. I humbly hope for good fortune in being allowed to attach myself to her; even if this were possible, it would still be a matter of cultivating talent under your esteemed tutelage. However, there is a vast difference between our social standings—this is merely the foolish fantasy of a poor scholar. Yet, as I have long been favored by my respected master's special kindness and affection for talent, I dare to make this request with great embarrassment. May I ask if you would be willing to overlook his past faults and offer your support?"
13	吳翰林欣然道：「原來為此，實不瞞兄說，向日所議非小女，原是舍甥女。」蘇有德驚問道：「為何卻原是令甥女？」吳翰林道：「舍甥女乃白舍親最所鍾愛，前因奉使虜廷，慮有不測，深以甥女托弟，為代擇婿。小弟偶見令弟才貌，與舍甥女可稱佳偶，所以苦苦相扳，蓋欲不負舍親之托也。若是小女，葑菲之陋，安敢妄扳君子，今令弟既翻然俯就，又承賢契見教，況舍甥女猶然待字，老夫自當仍執斧柯，撮合良偶，方知前言為不謬耳。」蘇有德道：「原來恩師前日之議，不獨憐才，更有此義舉，門生輩夢夢不知，殊為可笑。今日得蒙老恩師覆庇，曲賜成全，真可謂生死肉骨，舍弟異日雖犬馬銜結，亦不能報高厚於萬一矣。」因復將禮送上，深深打一恭道：「些須薄物，聊展鄙忱。若是師臺峻拒，便是棄門生於門墻之外了，萬望叱存，足徵收錄。」 Master Wu Hanlin smiled and said, "It turns out to be about this. "If it were my own daughter, I would not dare to recklessly match her with a gentleman, for she is but an unremarkable girl. Now that your younger brother has humbly accepted the proposal and also received instruction from such a worthy person, and since my niece still awaits marriage, of course I shall continue to act as go-between and help unite this excellent couple. Only now do I truly know that what was said before is not mistaken." Su Youde said, "It turns out that my esteemed master's previous proposal was not only an act of compassion for talent but also a noble deed. We disciples were unaware and acted blindly—how amusing it is." Today, I have been blessed with the protection and generous assistance of my esteemed master. This is truly a matter of life and death, as if bones were restored to flesh. In the future, even if my younger brother serves you like a dog or horse in gratitude, he will still be unable to repay your boundless kindness by even the smallest fraction." He then once again presented the gifts and deeply bowed, saying, "These humble items are offered merely as a token of my modest sincerity. If you, esteemed master, were to refuse them, it would mean casting me out from your door. I earnestly hope you will accept them and show that I am still considered part of your household."
14	吳翰林道：「厚禮本不該收，既賢契過於用情，只得愧領一二。」因點了四色。蘇有德再三懇求，吳翰林決意不受。又用了一杯茶，蘇有德就起身說道：「門生在此混擾，有妨老師靜養，今且告退，容改日再來拜求台翰。」吳翰林道：「本當留此一話，賢契又以賤禮見諒。既如此，改日奉屈敘罷。」遂相送而再出。吳翰林信以為然，以為不負以前一番好意，心下深喜。不題。 Master Wu Hanlin said, "Such generous gifts should not be accepted in the first place. However, since you and your worthy friend have shown such deep sincerity, I can only accept a small portion out of shame." He then selected four items. After having another cup of tea, Su Youde rose and said, "Your humble student has stayed here long enough, disturbing your rest. I shall take my leave now and return on another day to respectfully request a letter from you." Master Wu Hanlin said, "I should have kept you here for further conversation, but my worthy friend has shown me such kindness." Since that is the case, we shall meet again on another day to continue our discussion." They then bid each other farewell and departed. Master Wu Hanlin believed this to be true, thinking that he had not betrayed the previous good intentions, and was deeply pleased in his heart. No further mention is made of this.

Su Youde quickly replied, "My master's great kindness is too much; I dare not refuse. However, my younger brother has been living in seclusion in the countryside and may be unable to come due to the long distance." The messenger left. By afternoon, Su Youde himself came to attend the gathering. After greeting and exchanging courtesies, Master Wu Hanlin inquired, "It would be even better if your younger brother could meet with me." Su Youde said, "Since my younger brother offended you, he has been avoiding the city and studying in seclusion in the countryside. Although I am now favored by your teacher's forgiveness, he still feels ashamed and dares not enter the city to meet relatives or friends." If an invitation for a marriage alliance could be extended, then there will be ample time in the future for him to serve and attend upon you." Master Wu Hanlin said, "His spirit and conduct are often beyond others; he is truly admirable." He then had wine served. The two sat facing each other, drinking and chatting about trivial matters in between. They only drank until dusk when Su Youde took his leave. Master Wu Hanlin immediately took out a letter and handed it to Su Youde, saying, "I should personally accompany you, my elder brother, but due to the strict orders from the court regarding my official duties, I must depart on the road tomorrow or the day after. Therefore, I offer this as a substitute. Upon seeing this, my dear relative will have no reason to refuse." I shall send someone again to extend my congratulations when the auspicious date is set." Su Youde said, "Your kind efforts and assistance—your master's grace cannot be expressed in words. Once I receive good news from this endeavor, I shall personally lead my younger brother to your door and prostrate myself in gratitude." He then took the letter, repeatedly expressed his thanks, and departed. After several days, Master Wu Hanlin recovered fully and indeed went to the capital as planned. No further mention is made of him.
16	卻說蘇有德得了這封書，遂連夜出城，回到家中，悄悄將吳翰林書信拆開一看，只見上寫著： Now, Su Youde having obtained the letter, left the city at night and returned home. Quietly, he opened Master Wu Hanlin's letter to find written inside:
17	眷小弟吳珪頓首。致書姊丈大人台座前。弟自別後，遂馬首北向，不意出城時，酬應太煩，致於感冒，一病幾危，感蒙屢使垂顧，足徵骨肉至意，今幸粗安，即欲赴京。茲有言者，向為甥女姻事，曾覓一蘇生者，誠風流佳偶也，弟注意久之，再三媒說，奈彼生堅執不從，弟深怪之，前與姊丈面言者，即此生也，今復自悔，反來懇求，弟喜快不勝，用是重執斧柯，獻之東床，幸姊丈留神鑒選。如果弟言不謬，引之入幕，則鳳臺佳偶，星戶良人，大可慰晚年女兒之樂矣。弟行色匆匆，不能多及，乞為原諒。不宣。 Affectionate younger brother Wu Gui kowtows twice. At that time, when I spoke with you face to face about this matter, it was precisely this young man. Now, unexpectedly, he has come to regret his decision and is earnestly pleading for the match. I am overjoyed at this turn of events and have once again taken up the role of go-between, presenting him as a son-in-law. I hope you will kindly consider and select him with care. If my words are not mistaken, introducing him into your family would make for a most auspicious match—truly a fine husband and an ideal partner. This will surely bring great joy to my daughter in her later years. My departure is urgent, so I cannot elaborate further; please accept my apologies and forgive me. No more to say.
18	蘇有德看了又看，見上面只寫蘇生，并未寫出蘇友白名字來，遂滿心歡喜道：「初意我只打算頂了蘇友白字，今他書上既未說破，我何不竟自出名字去求，就是有人認得，卻也無妨了。況吳翰林又進京去了，誰人對會。倘僥倖事成，後來知道便了，一他退了。」算計已定，遂將原書照舊封好。又備了一副重禮，擇了一個好日子，自家打扮得齊齊整整，叫許多家人跟隨，興意勃勃，竟望錦石村來。 Su Youde read the letter over and over, noticing that it only mentioned "Master Su" without specifying the name Su Youbai. He also prepared a generous gift, chose an auspicious day, dressed himself neatly and properly, and had many family members accompany him. Full of enthusiasm, he set off directly for Jinshi Village.

At this time, Master Bai Shilang was chatting idly with Zhang Guiru in the Mengcao Xuan pavilion. You may wonder why Zhang Guiru, whose hidden intentions had been exposed by Su Youbai to Yansu, could still remain here when the young lady naturally could not tolerate him.
20	原來楊巡撫被白公留在後園住時，大家要即景題詩，不期事有湊巧，蘇友白先與張軌如往來時，在園中遊玩，蘇友白興高，往往即景留題，今日無心中，都為張軌如盜竊之用。白公那裡得知許多委曲，每見一詩，必加贊羨，送與小姐玩賞。小姐見蘇友白去後，張軌如詩思更佳，心下狐疑，遂不敢輕易向白公開口，故張軌如猶得高處西席，揚揚得意。 Originally, when Inspector Yang was staying in the back garden at Master Bai's invitation, everyone wanted to compose poems on the spot. Unexpectedly, things coincided conveniently: Su Youbai had previously been in contact with Zhang Guiru and often played in the garden. In his enthusiasm, Su Youbai frequently composed spontaneous verses inspired by the scenery. Today, without intention, all of these were used by Zhang Guiru through theft. Master Bai had no way of knowing all the behind-the-scenes details; whenever he saw a poem, he would always praise it highly and present it to the young lady for appreciation. The young lady, after Su Youbai's departure, noticed that Zhang Guiru's poetic talent had become even more remarkable. Suspicious and doubtful, she dared not easily bring it up to Master Bai; thus, Zhang Guiru continued to hold the esteemed position of private tutor, full of self-satisfaction and pride.
21	這日白公正與張軌如閒談，忽門上送上吳舅老爺書來。白公拆開一看，察知來意，心下又驚又喜，不好對軌如說，遂將來書袖了。再接過名帖一看，只見上寫著：「門下眷晚學生蘇有德頓首拜」。白公遂起，對張軌如道：「吳舍親薦一個門生在此，只得去見他一見。」張軌如道：「這個自然。」遂辭出往後園去了。 On this day, as Master Bai was chatting idly with Zhang Guiri, the gate suddenly delivered a letter from Uncle Wu. Master Bai opened it and took a look, immediately understanding the intent behind the letter. He felt both surprised and delighted but dared not mention it to Zhang Guiru; thus, he concealed the letter in his sleeve. He then took up the visiting card and looked at it, only to see written: "Your humble student Su Youde kowtows respectfully." Master Bai then rose and said to Zhang Guiru, "My cousin Wu has recommended a student here; I must go see him for a moment." Zhang Guiru replied, "That is only natural." He then took his leave and went to the back garden.
22	白公出到前廳，就叫人請蘇相公相見。蘇有德見請，纔穿了衣巾，步行進來。白公在廳上，向下將蘇有德人物一看，只見： Master Bai went out to the front hall and immediately ordered someone to invite Master Su for a meeting. Su Youde, upon being summoned, put on his robe and head covering and walked in on foot. Standing at the front of the hall, Master Bai looked down at Su Youde's appearance and saw:
23	衣服鮮楚，舉止高昂。骨豐皮厚，一身乏情韻之姿，似財主而非才人。面白鼻紅，滿臉橫酒肉之氣，類富翁而非賦客。金裝玉裹，請看衣裳。前擁後隨，只堪皮相。 His clothes were fresh and neat, his demeanor proud and confident. He had thick bones and a heavy build, with no graceful charm in his bearing; he looked like a wealthy man rather than a talented scholar. His face was pale and his nose red, full of the air of wine and meat; he resembled a rich old man rather than an elegant literatus. Gilded and adorned in jade-like finery—look at his clothes! Flanked by attendants before and behind, he is only worthy of being judged by appearances.
24	蘇有德進得廳來，就呈上禮帖，要請白公拜見。白公再三不肯，因是便服，定要蘇有德換過大衣，方纔見禮。禮畢，遜坐坐定，先是白公說道：「吳舍親久稱賢契大才，學生多時想慕，今接芝宇，頗慰老懷。」蘇有德忙打一恭道：「晚學生後進未學，陋質庸才，過蒙吳老師垂青，拔識謬薦，進於老恩臺泰山北斗之下，仰企俯思，不勝惶悚。」白公道：「老夫衰邁之人，睹兄青年珠玉，可謂有緣。」因問：「高居何處，椿萱定然並茂？」蘇有德道：「不幸先嚴見背，止寡母在堂，寒舍處此，僅十七八里之地，名馬春。」白公道：「原來咫尺，老夫不能物色，深負水清之鑑矣。」說罷，左右送上茶來。 As soon as Su Youde entered the hall, he presented a gift list and requested to pay respects to Master Bai. Master Bai repeatedly refused, saying that since he was in informal attire, Su Youde must first change into formal robes before any ceremony could take place. After the ceremony, they sat down in a humble manner. First, Master Bai said, "My cousin Wu has long praised your great talent and virtue; for many years I have admired you from afar. Now that we finally meet, it brings me much comfort." Su Youde immediately bowed respectfully and said, "I am a humble student of late learning, possessing only mediocre talent and shallow ability. I have been overly favored by Master Wu's kind recognition and mistaken recommendation, placing me under the esteemed presence of this great elder, whose wisdom is as towering as Mount Tai or the North Star. To look up to you in admiration and ponder beneath your guidance fills me with nothing but awe and trepidation." Master Bai said, "I am an old man in decline. To see such a young gem as you is truly a matter of fate." He then asked, "Where do you reside? I presume your parents must be in good health?" Su Youde replied, "Unfortunately, my late father has passed away. Only my widowed mother remains at home. My humble residence is located about seventeen or eighteen li from here, in a place called Machun." Master Bai said, "It turns out we are so close. That I have not yet recognized you is a great failure on my part in discerning talent." After saying this, attendants on both sides served tea.
25	茶罷，蘇有德就起身告辭。白公道：「多承遠顧，本當小飯，但初識荊，未敢草草相褻，容擇吉再當奉屈。」蘇有德道：「蒙賜登龍，已出望外，何敢復有所叨。」遂一恭辭出。白公遂送出大門外，再三鄭重而別。家人將禮物呈上，白公點了六色，餘者退壁。蘇有德見白公相待甚殷，以為事有可圖，滿心歡喜不題。 After the tea was served and finished, Su Youde rose to take his leave. Master Bai said, "I am deeply honored by your visit. I should have offered a small meal, but since we are just becoming acquainted, I dare not be too casual or disrespectful. Please allow me to choose an auspicious day and invite you again." Su Youde said, "Your kindness in granting me this opportunity is already beyond my expectations. How could I dare to make further demands?" With a respectful bow, he took his leave and departed. Master Bai then escorted him out to the main gate, parting with repeated solemn farewells. The attendants presented the gifts; Master Bai selected six items and returned the rest to Su Youde. Su Youde, seeing that Master Bai had received him with great warmth and sincerity, believed there was a chance to achieve his goal. He left full of joy, without further mention.
26	卻說白公退入後堂，小姐接著忙問道：「今日是何客來拜？」白公道：「今日不是他客，就是你母舅有書薦來求親的蘇生。」就將吳翰林的書遞與小姐。小姐接了一看，看見蘇生，滿心以為是蘇友白，又見吳翰林前日為他選的即是蘇友白，愈覺不勝之喜，轉故意問道：「此生叫甚名字，其人果知母舅之言否？」白公道：「此生叫做蘇有德，前日為母舅曾面對我說他考案首，有才情，人物風流，今日書中又如此稱揚。今日我見其人，骨相到也富厚，言談到也爽利，若說十分風流，則未必矣。」小姐聽見叫蘇有德，只因心下有個蘇友白，就誤認是他，萬萬不疑。白公雖說未必風流，一轉不深信道：「母舅為孩兒選擇此生，非一朝一夕，或亦有所取也，為何又與爹爹選擇不同？」白公道：「我今乍見，或者不能盡其底裏，改日少不得請他一敘，再細細察看，但只是已有一個張郎在此，卻如何區處？」小姐道：「不必有意偏向，爹爹只以才貌為去取可也。」白公道：「蘇生雖非冠玉之美，較之張郎似為差勝。若論其才，張郎數詩吾所深服，蘇生只據母舅言之，我尚未一試，實是主張不定。」 Now, after Master Bai returned to the inner hall, the young lady immediately asked, "Who was the guest who paid a visit today?" Master Bai said, "It wasn't any ordinary visitor; it was the young man Su recommended by your maternal uncle through a letter to seek marriage with us." He handed over Master Wu Hanlin's letter for the young lady to read. The young lady took the letter and read it. Seeing the name "Su Sheng," she assumed in her heart that it must be Su Youbai, especially since Master Wu Hanlin had recommended Su Youbai just the day before; this only increased her joy. She then deliberately asked, "What is his name? Does he truly know what my maternal uncle said about him?" Master Bai said, "This young man is named Su Youde. The other day, your maternal uncle mentioned to me in person that he had topped the examination and was a talented and refined individual with an elegant bearing. Today's letter also praises him highly." Today, when I saw the man in person, his appearance was indeed robust and prosperous, and his manner of speaking was sharp and decisive. If one were to say he is ten out of ten in charm and elegance, that might not be entirely accurate." The young lady heard the name Su Youde and, because she had been thinking of Su Youbai in her heart, mistakenly believed it was him without a shadow of doubt. Although Master Bai said he might not be as refined, the young lady did not believe it for a moment and thought, "Uncle chose this young man for me after careful consideration over many days. There must be something admirable about him. Why then is his choice different from Father's?" Master Bai said, "I have only just met him now and may not yet fully understand his true nature. Another day I will certainly invite him for a proper meeting to observe more carefully. But there is already an Zhang Lang here—how should we handle this situation?" The young lady said, "There is no need to show any deliberate favoritism. Father only needs to decide based on talent and appearance." Master Bai said, "Although Master Su is not as handsome as a jade ornament, he seems somewhat superior to Zhang Lang." As for talent, I deeply admire several of Zhang Lang's poems. As for Master Su, all I know is what your maternal uncle has said; I have not yet tested him myself. Truly, I am uncertain about whom to favor."
27	小姐心下暗想道：「蘇生與張郎好醜，相去何止天淵，爹爹素稱知人，今日為何這等糊塗！想是一時眼花。只叫他二人一會，自分玉石矣。」因說道：「涇渭自分，黑白難掩，若爹爹尚遲疑不決，何不聚二生於一堂，命題考試，誰妍誰媸可以立辨，異日去去取取，彼亦無怨也。」白公道：「此言甚是有理，我明日請蘇生，就請張郎陪，臨時尋一難題目考他，再定個優劣便了。」正是： The young lady thought to herself, "How can Master Su and Zhang Lang differ so greatly in appearance—how much more than heaven and abyss! Father has always been known for his discernment of people. Why is he being so confused today!" It must be that his eyes are momentarily clouded. "Just let the two of them meet once, and jade will naturally separate from stone." She continued, "The clear and the muddy will naturally part; black and white cannot be hidden. If Father is still hesitating, why not gather both young men in one hall, set a topic for an examination, and immediately determine who is more refined or coarse? In the future, when choosing between them, they would have no grounds for complaint." Master Bai said, "Your words are very reasonable. Tomorrow I will invite Master Su and ask Zhang Lang to accompany him; at the time, I shall prepare a difficult question for them both and determine their merits and shortcomings." Indeed:
28	風雨相兼至，燕鶯雜沓來。 Wind and rain come together, as swallows and orioles arrive in a flurry.
29	若非春有主，幾誤落蒼苔。 If spring had no master to claim it, who would not mistakenly fall into the moss?
30	按下白公與小姐商量不題。 Leaving aside Master Bai and his daughter's discussion for now.
31	卻說張軌如與白公家人最熟，這日蘇有德來求親之事，到次日早有人報與張軌如。張軌如聞知大驚，問道：「此人是誰？」報他的道：「此人是金陵學裏秀才，叫做蘇有德。」張軌如聽了，不知音同字不同，卻也認做蘇友白，心下道：「這小畜生，我說他為何就不別我而去，原來是去央吳翰林書來做媒，要奪我已成之事。況我在此，雖為姻事，名色卻只是西賓，他到公公正正來求親，考又考他不過，人物又比他不上，況我的新柳詩，紅梨曲又是他做的，倘白公一時對會出來反許了他，我用了許多心力豈不枉費了！必設一計驅逐了他，方遂我心。」想了一回，忽然想起道：「小蘇曾對我說，吳翰林有個女兒招他，他不肯，吳翰林甚是怪他，為何又轉央他來說親，此中尚有些古怪。」 Now, Zhang Guiru was very familiar with Master Bai's household. On this day, the news that Su Youde had come to propose marriage reached Zhang Guiru early the next morning through someone else. Zhang Guiru was greatly startled upon hearing this and asked, "Who is this man?" The one who informed him said, "This person is a xiucai from the Nanjing school; his name is Su Youde." Upon hearing this, Zhang Guiru did not realize that the pronunciation was the same but the characters were different; he mistakenly took it to be Su Youbai. In his mind, he thought, "This little wretch! I wondered why he left me without a word—turns out he went and asked Master Wu Hanlin to write a letter as an intermediary in order to snatch away what was already mine." Moreover, while I am here for the marriage matter, my position is only that of a private tutor. He has come openly to propose in person; not only did he outperform me on the examination, but his appearance also surpasses mine. Besides, my "New Willow Poem" and "Red Pear Tune" were actually written by him. If Master Bai happens to discover this and ends up agreeing to marry him instead, all the effort I have put in will be wasted! I must devise a plan to drive him away if I am to achieve my goal." After thinking for a while, he suddenly recalled and said to himself, "Little Su once told me that Master Wu Hanlin had proposed marriage to his daughter, but he refused. Master Wu was very angry with him. So why is he now asking through Master Wu again? There must be something strange about this."
32	正躊躇間，忽見管門的董榮拏了個請帖來，說道：「老爺請相公明日同金陵來的蘇相公敘敘。」張軌如道：「小老來的好，我正要問你，昨日那蘇相公來見老爺，為著何事？」董榮道：「是我們吳舅老爺薦來求小姐親事的。」張軌如道：「你們舅老爺說他有甚好，就薦他來？」董榮道：「這話說起來甚長，我家老爺在北京時，我家小姐曾在舅老爺家住了些時，那時舅老爺見這蘇相公考了個案首，又見他在那裡題得詩好，就要將我家小姐許配他，只因這蘇相公不肯，就拋撇了，近日不知為甚，這蘇相公又從了，故此舅老爺纔寫書薦他求親。」 While hesitating over this, he suddenly saw Old Man Dong Rong holding an invitation and said, "Master has invited you to meet with Master Su from Nanjing tomorrow." Zhang Guiru said, "Old Dong has come at just the right time. I was about to ask you—what business did Master Su have with Master yesterday?" Dong Rong replied, "He is the young man recommended by our Uncle Wu to propose marriage for the young lady." Zhang Guiru asked, "What good qualities did your uncle say he has that led him to recommend him?" Dong Rong said, "This story is quite long. When my master was in the capital, our young lady once stayed at Uncle Wu's home for some time. At that time, Uncle Wu saw this Master Su top the examination and also noticed his excellent poetry; he wanted to marry our young lady to him. However, because Master Su refused, it fell through. Recently, I don't know why, but now Master Su has agreed, so Uncle Wu wrote a letter recommending him for marriage."
33	張軌如冷笑道：「這等說起來，你家老爺與小姐一向要選才子都是虛名，只消央個大分上便好了。」董榮道：「張相公如何這等說，老爺因這蘇相公有真才，纔選他，為何卻是虛名？」張軌如道：「小老何這等眼鈍，這人你曾見過，就是前日同我來送新柳詩，你老爺與小姐看了不中意笑的。」董榮道：「那裡是他，我還記得那日同張相公來的，是個俊俏後生，這位蘇相公，雖然年紀不多，卻是敦敦篤篤一個人，那裡是他！」張軌如驚問道：「既不是他，為何也叫做蘇有白？」董榮道：「名帖上是蘇有德。」張軌如道：「是那兩個字？」董榮道：「有是有無之有，德是德行之德。」張軌如聽了，又驚又喜道：「這又奇了，如何又有一個人？」董榮道：「相公明日會他，便知端的，相公請收了貼子，我還要去請蘇相公哩。」說罷，便放下帖子。張軌如暗想道：「既不是蘇友白，我的腳跟便可立定了。記得吳翰林要招女婿與考案首的小蘇，明明說是他的事，為何此人又討得書來，莫非亦有盜竊之弊，明日相見時，我慢慢觀他動靜，敲打他兩句。倘若假便自立腳不穩了。」心下方纔有歡喜。不題。 Zhang Guiru coldly laughed and said, "So it turns out that your master and young lady have always been seeking talented scholars for show only. It seems all they need is to ask someone with a strong connection." Dong Rong said, "Master Zhang, how can you say such a thing? Master chose this Master Su precisely because he has genuine talent. Why do you call it mere show?" Zhang Guiru said, "Old Dong, how could you be so blind? You have seen this man before—he is the same person who came with me a few days ago to deliver the 'New Willow Poem,' which your master and young lady looked at and found unsatisfactory." Dong Rong said, "How can that be him? I still remember the young man who came with Master Zhang on that day—he was a handsome youth. This Master Su is indeed not very old, but he is a solid and earnest person. How could it possibly be the same man!" Zhang Guiru exclaimed in surprise, "If he is not him, then why does he also have the name Su Youbai?" Dong Rong said, "The visiting card says Su Youde." Zhang Guiru asked, "Which two characters are they?" Dong Rong replied, "You is the you of 'you have' or 'you lack,' and De is the de of virtue." Zhang Guiru, upon hearing this, was both surprised and delighted and said, "This is even more strange—how can there be another person with such a name?" Dong Rong said, "Master Zhang will meet him tomorrow and then know for sure. Please keep the invitation card, Master. I still need to go invite Master Su." After saying this, he put down the visiting card. Zhang Guiru thought to himself, "Since it is not Su Youbai, my position here is now secure. I remember that Master Wu Hanlin wanted to recruit a son-in-law and had mentioned the young Su who topped the examination. That was clearly his own matter—why has this man also obtained a letter of recommendation? Perhaps there is some trickery or theft involved. When we meet tomorrow, I will carefully observe his behavior and gently test him with a few words." If he turns out to be an impostor, then his position will immediately become unstable." With this thought in mind, Zhang Guiru finally felt a sense of joy. (No further comment is made.)
34	卻說董榮拏了一箇請帖，直到馬村蘇家來問。蘇有德接了請帖，就留董榮酒飯，再問道明日還有何客？董榮道：「別無他客，止有本府館中張相公奉陪。」蘇有德知是張軌如，便不問了。董榮吃完酒飯，作謝過，道說：「蘇相公，明日千萬早些來。路遠免得小人再來。蘇有德道：「不敢再勞，我自早來就是了。」董榮去了。蘇有德又躊躇歡喜道：「我的事，張軌如是神仙也不知道。他的事，誰知都在我腹中。他若不遜，便將底揭出，叫他置身無地。」因這一算，有分教──欲鑽無地，掬盡西江。正是： Meanwhile, Dong Rong took a visiting card and went all the way to Ma Cun Su's family to inquire. Su Youde received the invitation, then kept Dong Rong for a meal and wine, and asked again, "Will there be any other guests tomorrow?" Dong Rong replied, "There will be no other guests except Master Zhang from the local academy who will accompany you." Su Youde, upon learning that it was Zhang Guiru, did not ask any more questions. After finishing the meal and wine, Dong Rong thanked Su Youde and said, "Master Su, please be sure to come early tomorrow. The road is far; you wouldn't want me to have to make another trip." Su Youde replied, "I would not dare trouble you again. I will come early on my own." Dong Rong then left. Su Youde hesitated for a moment, then happily thought to himself, "My situation is something even the immortal Zhang Guiru could not know. As for his affairs, who knows they are all in my mind?" If he dares to be arrogant, I will expose the truth and leave him with no place to stand." Because of this plan, it was destined that—there would be nowhere to hide, and all the western rivers would be drained in pursuit. Indeed:
35	人有害虎心，虎無傷人意。 When people harbor a heart to harm the tiger, the tiger has no intention of harming them.
36	鷸蚌兩相爭，原是漁人利。 The clam and the sandpiper fight fiercely, but in the end it is the fisherman who benefits.
37	不知明日二人相見，正是如何，且聽下回分解。 As for how these two men would meet the next day, we shall hear of it in the next chapter.
