書者,著德之理於竹帛而陳之,令人觀焉,以著所從事,故曰:「書者,此之著者也。」詩者,志德之理,而明其指,令人緣之以自成也,故曰「詩者,此之志者也。」易者,察人之精德之理與弗循,而占其吉凶,故曰「易者,此之占者也。」春秋者,守往事之合德之理與不合,而紀其成敗,以為來事師法,故曰「春秋者,此之紀者也。」禮者,體德理而為之節文,成人事,故曰「禮者,此之體者也。」樂者,書、詩、易、春秋、禮五者之道備,則合於德矣,合則驩然大樂矣,故曰「樂者,此之樂者也。」人能脩德之理,則安利之,謂福。莫不慕福,弗能必得,而人心以為鬼神能與於利害,是故具犧牲俎豆粢盛,齋戒而祭鬼神,欲以佐成福,故曰祭祀鬼神,為此福者也。德之理盡施於人,其在人也,內而難見,是以先王舉德之頌而為辭語,以明其理,陳之天下,令人觀焉。垂之後世,辯議以審察之,以轉相告。是故弟子隨師而問,博學以達其知,而明其辭以立其誠,故曰博學辯議,為此辭者也。
