問曰:「子胥、范蠡何人也?」「子胥勇而智,正而信。范蠡智而明,皆賢人。」問曰:「子胥死,范蠡去,二人行違,皆稱賢,何?」「《論語》曰:『陳力就列,不能者止。』事君以道言耳。范蠡單身入越,主於伯,有所不合,故去也。」問曰:「不合何不死?」曰:「去止,事君之義也。義無死,胥死者,受恩深也。今蠡猶重也,不明甚矣。」問曰:「受恩死,死之善也。臣事君,猶妻事夫,何以去?」「《論語》曰:『三日不朝,孔子行。』行者,去也。傳曰:『孔子去魯,燔俎無肉;曾子去妻,蔾蒸不熟。』微子去,比干死,孔子并稱仁。行雖有異,其義同。」「死與生,敗與成,其同奈何?」「《論語》曰:『有殺身以成仁。』子胥重其信,范蠡貴其義。信從中出,義從外出。微子去者,痛殷道也。比干死者,忠於紂也。箕子亡者,正其紀也。皆忠信之至,相為表裏耳。」問曰:「二子孰愈乎?」曰:「以為同耳。然子胥無為能自免於無道之楚,不忘舊功,滅身為主。合,即能以霸;不合,可去則去,可死則死。范蠡遭世不明,被髮佯狂,無正不行,無主不止。色斯而舉,不害於道。億則屢中,貨財殖聚。作詐成伯,不合乃去。三遷避位,名聞海內。去越入齊,老身西陶。仲子由楚,傷中而死。二子行有始終。子胥可謂兼人乎?」
