越王曰:“上不逮于神农,下不及于尧舜,今子以至圣之道以说寡人,诚非吾所及也。且吾闻之也,父辱则子死,君辱则臣死。今寡人亲已辱于吴矣。欲行一切之变,以复吴仇,愿子更为寡人图之。”范子曰:“君辱则死,固其义也。立死。下士人而求成邦者,上圣之计也。且夫广天下,尊万乘之主,使百姓安其居、乐其业者,唯兵。兵之要在于人,人之要在于谷。故民众则主安,谷多则兵疆。王而备此二者,然后可以图之也。”越王曰:“吾欲富邦疆兵,地狭民少,奈何为之?”范子曰:“夫阳动于上,以成天文,阴动于下,以成地理。审察开置之要,可以为富。凡欲先知天门开及地户闭,其术:天高五寸,减天寸六分以成地。谨司八谷,初见出于天者,是谓天门开,地户闭,阳气不得下入地户。故气转动而上下、阴阳俱绝,八谷不成,大贵必应其岁而起,此天变见符也。谨司八谷,初见入于地者,是谓地户闭。阴阳俱会,八谷大成,其岁大贱,来年大饥,此地变见瑞也。谨司八谷,初见半于人者,籴平,熟,无灾害。故天倡而见符,地应而见瑞。圣人上知天,下知地,中知人,此之谓天平地平,以此为天图。”
