郁離子曰：「膏粱可以易豆羹，狐貉可以奪縕絮，民情之常也。是故膏粱不足，豆羹可也；狐貉不足，縕絮可也。野鳥係於籠中而馴者食也。籠中之不如山藪，入其籠者知之。有童子側木檠而設食以誘鼠，多獲鼠。一夕，逸其一，遂不復獲鼠。今使持槲葉之衣，麥麧之餅，而招於市曰：『舍爾室，捐而服，而來與我共此。』則雖其子亦走而避矣。是故不情之事，大人不為之。」 |
| | Yu Lizzi said: "Luxurious food can replace simple porridge, and sable furs can surpass coarse wool; this is the common sentiment of the people." Therefore, if luxurious food is insufficient, simple porridge will suffice; if sable furs are lacking, coarse wool can also be used. A wild bird caged and tamed is fed. Those who have entered the cage know that what is inside it cannot compare to the mountains and marshes. A boy placed wooden supports on the side and set out food to lure rats, catching many of them. One night, one rat escaped, and from then on, he caught no more rats. Now suppose someone were to wear a robe made of oak leaves, hold out flatbread made from coarse wheat flour, and call out in the marketplace: "Leave your homes, abandon your clothes, and come with me to share this." Then even his own children would run away and avoid him. Therefore, unreasonable matters are not done by a wise person."
