| | The people of Dongou refer to fire as hu, and they make no distinction between the terms for fire and tiger. Their country has no pottery or smelting industries, and they cover their houses with thatch, so there are frequent fires; the people of the country all suffer from this. A merchant from the coastal area traveled to Jin and heard that in the state of Jin there was a man named Feng Fu who was good at fighting tigers; whenever Feng Fu was present, there were no tigers in his town. He returned and told this to Duke Dongou. Duke Dongou was very pleased, and he gave the merchant four sets of ten horses, two hubs of jade, and ten bolts of brocade, ordering him to serve as an envoy to seek out Feng Fu in Jin. When Feng Fu arrived, Duke Dongou ordered his carriage to be prepared, left the driver's seat empty as a sign of respect, and met him outside the city gate. They rode together into the capital and were lodged in a guesthouse at the center of the state as honored guests. The next day, there was a fire in the marketplace; the people of the state hurried to inform Feng Fu. Feng Fu rolled up his sleeves and followed the citizens outside, but he could not find any tiger. The fire was approaching the palace and shops; the people crowded around Feng Fu and rushed toward it, where he was burned to death. Thus, the merchant was punished for his false report, while Feng Fu died without realizing the misunderstanding.
