鄭子叔逃寇於野，野人羹藿以食之，甘。歸而思焉，采而茹之，弗甘矣。郁離子曰：「是豈藿之味異乎？人情而已。故有富而棄其妻、貴而遺其族者，繇遇而殊之也。昔楚昭王出奔而亡其屨，使人求之以百金，曰：『吾不忘其相從於患難之中也。』故論功而未及者皆不怨，非術也，誠之感也。」 |
| | Zheng Zishu fled from bandits into the wilds, and the people of the wilds served him porridge made with fava beans; he found it sweet. After returning home, he thought about it, gathered some himself and ate them, but they were no longer sweet. Yu Lizi said: "Is this because the flavor of fava beans has changed?" It is merely human sentiment. Therefore, there are those who abandon their wives when they become rich and forsake their clansmen when they attain high status; this is due to the difference in circumstances. In the past, King Zhao of Chu fled and lost his shoes. He sent someone to search for them with a reward of one hundred gold pieces, saying: "I do not forget that they accompanied me through hardship." Therefore, those who contributed to the cause but were not yet recognized did not feel resentment. This was not due to any strategy, but rather the power of sincerity."
