Jueshu was self-confident and liked to go against others' opinions; he farmed in Guiyin, taking its high ground for rice cultivation and the low-lying areas for millet. His friend said to him, "Millet prefers dry land, and rice prefers moist soil. But you do the opposite; this goes against their nature. How can you expect a good harvest?" He did not listen. After ten years of farming, his granaries had no stored grain. He then looked at his friend's fields and found that the harvest was exactly as his friend had said. Jueshu then bowed and said, "I now know I have made a mistake." Later, when doing business in Wenshang, he always rushed to buy goods that were urgently needed at the time. He competed with others wherever he went. When those who had hurried after the same opportunities arrived together, he was often unable to make a purchase. His friend said to him again, "A good merchant buys what others do not compete for. When the opportunity comes, profits will be doubled; this is why Baigui became wealthy." He did not listen again. After another ten years, he fell into great hardship and once more reflected on his friend's words, bowing and saying, "From now on, I dare not fail to regret my mistakes." On another day, he took a ship and went out to sea by the hands of sailors, inviting his friend to go with him. They sailed eastward into turbulent waters, approaching a vast abyss. His friend said, "This is the Returnless Abyss; once we go there, we will never be able to return." He did not listen again and entered the depths of the chasm. After nine years, he encountered the waves of a transformed Kun fish, which exhaled to return him. When he returned, his hair had turned completely white and his body was as withered as dried meat; no one recognized him. He then bowed twice and kowtowed, thanking his friend, and raised his hands to the sky while vowing, "If I do not regret my actions, may it be as certain as the sun." His friend laughed and said, "Regret is indeed regret, but how can it help now?" People said that Jueshu repented three times until his death, yet it was less burdensome not to regret at all.
