楚王問於陳軫曰：「寡人之待士也盡心矣，而四方之賢者不貺寡人，何也？」陳子曰：「臣少嘗游燕，假館於燕市，左右皆列肆，惟東家甲焉。帳臥起居，飲食器用，無不備有，而客之之者，日不過一、二，或終日無一焉。問其故，則家有猛狗，聞人聲而出噬，非有左右之先容，則莫敢躡其庭。今王之門無亦有噬狗乎？此士所以艱其來也。」
