子游為武城宰，郭門之垤，有鸛遷其巢於墓門之表。墓門之老以告，曰：「鸛知天將雨之鳥也，而驟遷其巢，邑其大水乎？」子游曰：「諾。」命邑人悉具舟以俟。居數日，水果大至。郭門之垤沒，而雨不止，水且及於墓門之表，鸛之巢翹翹然，徘徊長唳，莫知其所處也。子游曰：「悲哉！是亦有知矣，惜乎其未遠也。」 |
| | Ziyou was the magistrate of Wucheng, and at Guomen's die, there was a stork that moved its nest to the monument in front of the tomb gate. An old man at the tomb gate reported this, saying: "The stork is a bird that knows when rain is coming. Now it has suddenly moved its nest; will there be great floods in our town?" Ziyou said, "Yes." He ordered the townspeople to prepare boats in readiness. After several days, torrential rains indeed came in great quantity. The dike at Guomen was submerged, and the rain did not stop. The water was about to reach the monument in front of the tomb gates; the stork's nest stood upright, the bird circling and crying loudly, uncertain where it should go. Ziyou said: "How sad!" "This bird also has some wisdom, but it is a pity that its knowledge was not far-reaching."
