《致人之道 - Way of Attracting People 》

English translation: AI and Chinese Text Project users [?] Library Resources
Someone asked about the way to attract people. Yu Lizzi said, "The Way attracts the virtuous; food attracts the common people; deep pools attract fish; marshes attract beasts; forests attract birds; stench attracts flies; profit attracts merchants." Therefore, those who are good at attracting things do so by offering what each one desires. In this way, there is nothing in the world that cannot be attracted. Therefore, one should not worry about people or things not coming, but rather about them not being at ease once they arrive. If one can attract others but cannot make them feel secure, it is better not to have attracted them in the first place, as this would cause no harm. A man from Yue studied methods of summoning ghosts and after three years mastered the technique. He then built an altar in the northeast corner of his room to summon ghosts. When many ghosts arrived, he had no food for them, so they led one another to become a source of mischief, and their disturbances became known outside. One night, the man died and his house was set on fire; no one in the neighborhood failed to laugh at him."
