或問致人之道，郁離子曰：「道致賢，食致民，淵致魚，藪致獸，林致鳥，臭致蠅，利致賈。故善致物者，各以其所好致之，則天下無不可致者矣。是故不患其有所不至，而患其有所不安，能致而不能安，不如不致之無傷也。粵人有學致鬼者，三年得其術。於是壇其室之北隅以集鬼，鬼至而多，無以食，則相帥以為妖，聲聞於外。一夕，其人死而爇其室，鄰里莫不笑之。」 |
| | Someone asked about the way to attract people. Yu Lizzi said, "The Way attracts the virtuous; food attracts the common people; deep pools attract fish; marshes attract beasts; forests attract birds; stench attracts flies; profit attracts merchants." Therefore, those who are good at attracting things do so by offering what each one desires. In this way, there is nothing in the world that cannot be attracted. Therefore, one should not worry about people or things not coming, but rather about them not being at ease once they arrive. If one can attract others but cannot make them feel secure, it is better not to have attracted them in the first place, as this would cause no harm. A man from Yue studied methods of summoning ghosts and after three years mastered the technique. He then built an altar in the northeast corner of his room to summon ghosts. When many ghosts arrived, he had no food for them, so they led one another to become a source of mischief, and their disturbances became known outside. One night, the man died and his house was set on fire; no one in the neighborhood failed to laugh at him."
