殷纣为天子而称独夫,仲尼为匹夫而称素王,尽此类也。故善钓者不易渊而殉鱼,君子不降席而追道。治乎八尺之中而德化光矣。古之人謌曰:“相彼玄鸟,止于陵阪;仁道在近,求之无远。”人情也、莫不恶谤,而卒不免乎谤,其故何也?非爱致力而不已之也,已之之术反也。谤之为名也,逃之而愈至,距之而愈来,讼之而愈多。明乎此,则君子不足为也;暗乎此,则小人不足得也。帝舜屡省,禹拜昌言,明乎此者也。厉王蒙戮,吴起刺之,暗乎此者也。、皆书名前策,著形列图,或为世法,或为世戒,可不慎之!曾子曰:“或言予之善,予惟恐其闻;或言予之不善,惟恐过而见予之鄙色焉。”故君子服过也,非徒饰其辞而已。诚发乎中心,形乎容貌,其爱之也深,其更之也速。如追兔,惟恐不逮,故有进业、无退功。《》曰:“相彼脊令,载飞载鸣。我日斯迈,而月斯征。”迁善不懈之谓也。夫闻过而不改,谓之丧心;思过而不改,谓之失体。失体、丧心之人,祸乱之所及也。君子舍旃。《周书》有言:“人毋鉴于水,鉴于人也。”鉴也者、可以察形,言也者、可以知德。小人耻其面之不及子都也,君子耻其行之不如尧、舜也。故小人尚明鉴,君子尚至言。至言也、非贤友则无取之,故君子必求贤友也。《》曰:“伐木丁丁,鸟鸣嘤嘤。出自幽谷,迁于乔木。”言朋友之义务,在切直以升于善道者也。故君子不友不如己者,非羞彼而大我也,不如己者须己而植者也。然则扶人不暇,将谁相我哉?吾之偾也亦无日矣!故偾则纵多,友邪则己僻也。是以君子慎取友也。孔子曰:“居而得贤友,福之次也。”夫贤者、言足听,貌足象,行足法,加乎善奖人之美,而好摄人之过,其不隐也如影,其不讳也如响,故我之惮之,若严君在堂,而神明处室矣。虽欲为不善,其敢乎?故求益者之居游也,必近所畏而远所易。《》云:“无弃尔辅,员于尔辐。屡顾尔仆,不输尔载。”亲贤求助之谓也。
