荀卿曰:“礼恭、然后可与言道之方,辞顺、然后可与言道之理,色从、然后可与言道之致。”“有争气者、勿与辨也。”孔子曰:“惟君子、然后能贵其言,贵其色,小人能乎哉?”仲尼、荀卿先后知之。问者曰:“或有周乎上哲之至论,通乎大圣之洪业,而好与俗士辨者何也?”曰:“以俗士为必能识之故也。何以验之?使彼有金石丝竹之乐,则不奏乎聋者之侧;有山龙华虫之文,则不陈乎瞽者之前;知聋者之不闻也,知瞽者之不见也,于己之心分数明白;至与俗士而独不然者,知分数者不明也。不明之故何也?夫俗士之牵达人也,犹鹑鸟之欺孺子也。鹑鸟之性善近人,飞不峻也,不速也,蹲蹲然似若将可获也,卒至乎不可获,是孺子之所以𨁉膝踠足而不以为弊也。俗士之与达人言也,受之虽不肯,拒之则无说;然而有赞焉,有和焉,若将可寤,卒至乎不可寤,是达人之所以乾唇竭声而不舍也。斯人也、固达之蔽者也,非达之达者也,虽能言之,犹夫俗士而已矣。非惟言也,行亦如之,得其所则尊荣,失其所则贱辱。昔仓梧丙娶妻美,而以与其兄,欲以为让也,则不如无让焉。尾生与妇人期于水边,水暴至不去而死,欲以为信也,则不如无信焉。叶公之党,其父攘羊而子证之,欲以为直也,则不如无直焉。陈仲子不食母兄之食,出居于陵,欲以为洁也,则不如无洁焉。宗鲁受齐豹之谋,死孟絷之难,欲以为义也,则不如无义焉。故凡道、蹈之既难,错之益不易,是以君子慎诸己以为往鉴焉。”
