君子必贵其言。贵其言则尊其身,尊其身则重其道,重其道所以立其教。言费则身贱,身贱则道轻,道轻则教废。故君子非其人则弗与之言,若与之言,必以其方。农夫则以稼穑,百工则以技巧,商贾则以贵贱,府史则以官守,大夫及士则以法制,儒生则以学业。故《》曰:“艮其辅,言有序。”不失事、中之谓也。若夫父慈子孝,姑爱妇顺,兄友弟恭,夫敬妻听,朋友必信,师长必教,有司日月虑知乎州闾矣。虽庸人则亦循循然与之言此,可也;过此而往,则不可也。故君子之与人言也,使辞足以达其知虑之所至,事足以合其性情之所安,弗过其任而强牵制也。苟过其任而强牵制,则将昏瞀委滞,而遂疑君子以为欺我也,不则曰“无闻知”矣。非故也。明偏而示之以幽,弗能照也;听寡而告之以微,弗能察也;斯所资于造化者也。虽曰无讼,其如之何?故孔子曰:“可与言而不与之言,失人;不可与言而与之言,失言。知者不失人,亦不失言。”夫君子之于言也,所致贵也,虽有夏后之璜,商汤之驷,弗与易也。今以施诸俗士,以为志诬而弗贵听也,不亦辱己而伤道乎!是以君子将与人语大本之源,而谈性、义之极者,必先度其心志,本其器量,视其锐气,察其堕衰,然后唱焉以观其和,导焉以观其随。随、和之徵发乎音声,形乎视听,著乎颜色,动乎身体,然后可以发而步远,功察而治微;于是乎闓张以致之,因来以进之,审谕以明之,杂称以广之,立准以正之,疏烦以理之。疾而勿迫,徐而勿失,杂而勿结,放而勿逸,欲其自得之也。故大禹善治水,而君子善导人;导人必因其性,治水必因其势;是以功无败而言无弃也。
