荀卿曰:「禮恭、然後可與言道之方,辭順、然後可與言道之理,色從、然後可與言道之致。」「有爭氣者、勿與辨也。」孔子曰:「惟君子、然後能貴其言,貴其色,小人能乎哉?」仲尼、荀卿先後知之。問者曰:「或有周乎上哲之至論,通乎大聖之洪業,而好與俗士辨者何也?」曰:「以俗士為必能識之故也。何以驗之?使彼有金石絲竹之樂,則不奏乎聾者之側;有山龍華蟲之文,則不陳乎瞽者之前;知聾者之不聞也,知瞽者之不見也,於己之心分數明白;至與俗士而獨不然者,知分數者不明也。不明之故何也?夫俗士之牽達人也,猶鶉鳥之欺孺子也。鶉鳥之性善近人,飛不峻也,不速也,蹲蹲然似若將可獲也,卒至乎不可獲,是孺子之所以𨁉膝踠足而不以為弊也。俗士之與達人言也,受之雖不肯,拒之則無說;然而有贊焉,有和焉,若將可寤,卒至乎不可寤,是達人之所以乾唇竭聲而不舍也。斯人也、固達之蔽者也,非達之達者也,雖能言之,猶夫俗士而已矣。非惟言也,行亦如之,得其所則尊榮,失其所則賤辱。昔倉梧丙娶妻美,而以與其兄,欲以為讓也,則不如無讓焉。尾生與婦人期於水邊,水暴至不去而死,欲以為信也,則不如無信焉。葉公之黨,其父攘羊而子證之,欲以為直也,則不如無直焉。陳仲子不食母兄之食,出居於陵,欲以為潔也,則不如無潔焉。宗魯受齊豹之謀,死孟縶之難,欲以為義也,則不如無義焉。故凡道、蹈之既難,錯之益不易,是以君子慎諸己以為往鑒焉。」
