天地之间,含气而生者,莫知乎人。人情之至痛,莫过乎丧亲。夫创巨者其日久,痛甚者其愈迟。故圣王制三年之服,所以称情而立文,为至痛极也。自天子至于庶人,莫不由之。帝王相传,未有知其所从来者,及孝文皇帝天姿谦让,务崇简易,其将弃万国,乃顾臣子,令勿行久丧,已葬则除之,将以省烦劳而宽群下也。观其诏文,唯欲施乎己而已,非为汉室创制丧礼而传之于来世也。后人遂奉而行焉,莫之分理。至乎显宗,圣德钦明,深照孝文一时之制,又惟先王之礼不可以久违,是以世祖徂崩,则斩衰三年,孝明既没,朝之大臣徒以己之私意忖度嗣君之必贪速除也,检之以太宗遗诏,不惟孝子之心,哀慕未歇,故令圣王之迹,陵迟而莫遵;短丧之制,遂行而不除。斯诚可悼之甚者也。滕文公、小国之君耳,加之生周之末世,礼教不行,犹能改前之失,咨问于孟轲,而服丧三年,岂况大汉配天之主,而废三年之丧,岂不惜哉!且作法于仁,其弊犹薄;道隆于己,历世则废,况以不仁之作,宣之于海内,而望家有慈孝,民德归厚,不亦难乎?《》曰:“尔之教矣,民胥放矣。”圣主若以游宴之间,超然远思,览周公之旧章,咨显宗之故事,感蓼莪之笃行,恶素冠之所刺,发复古之德音,改太宗之权令。事行之后,永为典式,传示万代,不刊之道也。
