或问左传疑义。曰:“公不求之于六经语孟之中,而用功于左传。且左传有甚么道理?纵有,能几何?’!天之所赋于我者,如光明宝藏,不会收得;却上他人门教化一两钱,岂不哀哉!只看圣人所说,无不是这个大本。如云:‘天高地下,万物散殊,而礼制行矣;流而不息,合同而化,而乐兴焉。’不然,子思何故说个‘天命之谓性,率性之谓道,修道之谓教’?此三句是怎如此说?是乃天地万物之大本大根,万化皆从此出。人若能体察得,方见得圣贤所说道理,皆从自己胸襟流出,不假他求。某向尝见吕伯恭爱与学者说左传,某尝戒之曰:‘语孟六经许多道理不说,恰限说这个。纵那上有些零碎道理,济得甚事?’伯恭不信,后来又说到汉书。若使其在,不知今又说到甚处,想益卑矣,固宜为陆子静所笑也。子静底是高,只是下面空疏,无物事承当。伯恭底甚低,如何得似他?”又曰:“人须是于大原本上看得透,自然心胸开阔,见世间事皆琐琐不足道矣。”又曰:“每日开眼,便见这四个字在面前,仁义礼智只趯著脚指头便是。这四个字若看得熟,于世间道理,沛然若决江河而下,莫之能御矣。若看得道理透,方见得每日所看经书,无一句一字一点一画不是道理之流行;见天下事无大无小,无一名一件不是此理之发见。如此,方见得这个道理浑沦周遍,不偏枯,方见得所谓‘天命之谓性’底全体。今人只是随所见而言,或见得一二分,或见得二三分,都不曾见那全体,不曾到那极处,所以不济事。”
