伯恭子約宗太史公之學,以為非漢儒所及,某嘗痛與之辨。子由古史言馬遷「淺陋而不學,疏略而輕信」。此二句最中馬遷之失,伯恭極惡之。古史序云:「古之帝王,其必為善,如火之必熱,水之必寒:其不為不善,如騶虞之不殺,竊脂之不穀。」此語最好。某嘗問伯恭:「此豈馬遷所能及?」然子由此語雖好,又自有病處,如云:「帝王之道以無為宗」之類。他只說得箇頭勢大,下面工夫又皆疏空。亦猶馬遷禮書云:「大哉禮樂之道!洋洋乎鼓舞萬物,役使群動。」說得頭勢甚大,然下面亦空疏,卻引荀子諸說以足之。又如諸侯年表,盛言形勢之利,有國者不可無;末卻云:「形勢雖強,要以仁義為本。」他上文本意主張形勢,而其末卻如此說者,蓋他也知仁義是箇好底物事,不得不說,且說教好看。如禮書所云,亦此意也。伯恭極喜渠此等說,以為遷知「行夏之時,乘殷之輅,服周之冕」,為得聖人為邦之法,非漢儒所及。此亦眾所共知,何必馬遷?然遷嘗從董仲舒遊,史記中有「余聞之董生云」,此等語言,亦有所自來也。遷之學,也說仁義,也說詐力,也用權謀,也用功利,然其本意卻只在於權謀功利。孔子說伯夷「求仁得仁,又何怨」!他一傳中首尾皆是怨辭,盡說壞了伯夷!子由古史皆刪去之,盡用孔子之語作傳,豈可以子由為非,馬遷為是?可惜子約死了,此論至死不曾明!。今求義理不於六經,而反取疏略淺陋之子長,亦惑之甚矣!
