因說程子「耳無聞,目無見」之答,曰:「決無此理。」遂舉釋教中有「塵既不緣,根無所著,反流全一,六用不行」之說,蘇子由以為此理至深至妙。蓋他意謂六根既不與六塵相緣,則收拾六根之用,反復歸於本體,而使之不行。顧烏有此理!廣因舉程子之說:「譬如靜坐時,忽有人喚自家,只得應他,不成不應。」曰:「彼說出楞嚴經。此經是唐房融訓釋,故說得如此巧。佛書中唯此經最巧。然佛當初也不如是說。如四十二章經,最先傳來中國底文字,然其說卻自平實。道書中有真誥,末後有道授篇,卻是竊四十二章經之意為之。非特此也,至如地獄託生妄誕之說,皆是竊他佛教中至鄙至陋者為之。!』西漢時儒者說道理,亦只是黃老意思。如揚雄太玄經皆是,故其自言有曰:『老子之言道德,吾有取焉耳。』後漢明帝時,佛始入中國。當時楚王英最好之,然都不曉其說。直至晉宋間,其教漸盛。然當時文字亦只是將莊老之說來鋪張,如遠師諸論,皆成片盡是老莊意思。直至梁會通間,達磨入來,然後一切被他埽蕩,不立文字,直指人心。蓋當時儒者之學,既廢絕不講;老佛之說,又如此淺陋;被他窺見這箇罅隙了,故橫說豎說,如是張皇,沒柰他何。人才聰明,便被他誘引將去。嘗見畫底諸祖師,其人物皆雄偉,故杲老謂臨濟若不為僧,必作一渠魁也。又嘗在廬山見歸宗像,尤為可畏;若不為僧,必作大賊矣。」
